Well located, spacious villa. Clean & tidy and tastefully decorated. Lovely swimming pool and gardens. Great views over the town and short distances to all amenities.

“Beautiful Malcesine, adequate accomodation”

Upon arrival, the Sat Nav said we were here but the small sign for the apartments didn't indicate that the way in for a car was a narrow gate a little further along. Which although passable, was a little snug. As was the parking, just enough for three cars but very snug if more than an average family sized car.

Once unloaded we were greeted by Gemma, the owner, although very pleasant, a combination of her lack of English and our lack of Italian prevented any discourse apart from pointing and gesturing. The resort 'rules' are also in English (as well as German) so at least we had that. As a welcome there was a bottle of red wine with two glasses left on the dining table, nice touch. The apartment also had a safe, operated by one of the keys given, which was a nice touch.

So the apartment then, the block is split into 3 units, we were in the middle one, the whole of the upper floor seems to be occupied by the owner. The apartment was clean and each of the three has its own theme colour running through, they look quite modern. You get all the basic amenities, including hair dryer, Italian/German/French satellite tv and an iron and board, toaster, oven/grill, crockery, cutlery, pans etc. The bedrooms were a twin and a double. Memory foam mattress and pillows was a welcome and unexpected bonus.

When we arrived it was early August and the area had been hit with soaring temperatures, as we hadn't yet acclimatised, we were struggling and to my surprise, there were no ceiling fans in any of the rooms. This omission for a location such as this in the hot summer months struck me as odd. After asking about the possibility of any fans, Michaela disappeared and managed to find us one within half an hour of arriving, although her English is much better than Gemma's I'm not certain of where it came from, we think it was her house. The windows, which fully open inwards have shutters which can block out most of the light so you won't be woken by the sun but can fill the place with fresh air if you need to.

Lack of fans aside, the unheated pool was a welcome distraction form the early heat. You share this with the other residents. Now here is a point worth mentioning, the pool hours are 9:30 to 19:00. No inflatables, no family or friends (unless residents). The 'no family or friends' rule doesn't apply to the owners family though who used the pool on several occasions, I suspect they didn't pay £1800 for the privilege. Anyone who fancies a morning swim before breakfast need not be an early riser either.

Around the pool are four beds and several of those low chairs that almost recline. Not enough if you have 3 apartments worth of 4 sun worshippers. Also don't expect to be able to hide under umbrellas if it gets too warm as there aren't any. The pool the only respite from the hot early afternoon sun, earlier and later there are some shadows but not sufficient to be classed as 'shade' to sit in for any useful length of time as usually Mrs A would soak up the sun whilst I sit close but covered in shade, tricky to accomplish here.

Whilst you are sunbathing or in the pool don't be alarmed by the many eyes watching you're failed attempts to look like an Olympic swimmer as it's just the regular cable cars taking people up and down monte baldo, every 15 minutes or so, it seems. After a quick wave I was able to confirm that, although the glass appears very tinted, the people in the cars can very clearly see my Thorpedo impression first hand.

The satellite tv is great if you have Italian or German language skills, otherwise unplug it to reduce the heat generated in the apartment. There are two wifi connections which were ok for surfing but not for streaming video and not always strong or available connections.

Bedrooms are large enough and the wardrobe space was sufficient along with the already mentioned comfortable memory foam.

The bathroom, however, contained one of the smallest shower cubicles I've ever encountered, if I dropped something I'd only be able to retrieve it if I stepped out of the unit first. The shower head either offered up a fine mist or appeared to want to soak the outside of the cubicle rather than the body squished in below it.
Considering the size of the bathroom this was unnecessarily small and shower time became a cause of much frustration for me. The bathroom also had a general drainy pong which was more prevalent after a rain storm so may have more to do with the sewer works than the property.

There were a few other seemingly minor things that annoyed, only one small bin bag was included, meaning we quickly needed to purchase bin bags, one toilet roll, there is a bidet, but not being a continental I was never going to convert. No washing up liquid, in fact it appeared as though the place was 'cleared out' of anything useful after the last guests left.

The Road on which the Villa Fiori is perched above is quite busy with plenty of motorbikes, mopeds and cars travelling past, there are also the daily crowds from the cable cars who can see you around the pool, if they wander into the cable car grounds which, when your body is as lumpy and ghostly white as mine, the less people exposed to it, the better.

Malcesine, down the easily navigable and not too steep for me, even though I had restricted mobility, hill, is lovely. The huge choice of restaurant means you don't have to eat at the same place twice for a month but you may quickly discover a favourite, as we did, and keep alternating evening meals in the hope you find another as welcoming. Don't let the rankings in Tripadvisor put you off, often the lower ranked restaurant scored higher with my family than Tripadvisor's averages suggested.

The views are incredible.

Linens and towels, it seems, aren't changed ( 2 week stay so expected weekly at least). We tried to ask about getting them changed and were shown to a washing machine in the basement which is available for 3 euros a go. Again possibly a language issue ( even saying it loudly in English didn't work!) but would have expected a weekly change considering the heat we were enduring.

Sitting out of the front of the apartments offers relatively unencumbered views of the top of the castle, the lake and peaks across the other side of Garda, with some wonderful views to while away the late evening hours, it was a lovely place to be.

There is the 'Malcesine Express' which will run you down into the old port and town on a half hourly basis and run you back, there is a reasonably regular bus service too.

All of the restaurants and shops generally speak English and are helpful and polite, and our immediate apartment neighbours, Dutch and German natives were friendly and made the stay much easier.

If Mosquitos find you tasty, as they did me, pack some light trousers and long sleeve shirts for this evenings out. I counted 22 bites and the rest of the family not many fewer.

With some minor updates to some elements of the facilities and amenities the Villa Fiori would be a delightful place to stay, but for us, as it stands, it can score nothing more than an average 3, based on the above mentioned issues we had and the amount paid. I hope I have been able to offer any prospective visitors enough to think about when considering staying here.

“Lovely apartment close to town and cable car”

Was very impressed by this lovely apartment. It is spotlessly clean, and benefits from a nice pool area and parking for 1 car. Location is great and it only takes about 10 mins to walk to the harbour. Also very handy for the Monte Baldo cable car

Gemma was very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to stay here again in the future. Thank you.
