Firstly we found the service and food to be first class - I can think of only one dish in the week which which I wouldn't have again, although the breakfasts were nothing particularly special (no hot food and not much choice) - aside from the coffee. The waiters/waitresses don't all speak great English, but they all had a great attitude, which is far more important.

The Hotel is conveniently located for both the seafront and the train station, yet street noise is quite low - helped by quality double glazed windows. However, tiled floors throughout meant that noise from other guests is very loud - we could clearly hear every footstep from the upstairs bedroom and the TV and conversation from the rooms either side. If you go to bed late and wake early this won't be a problem. Otherwise pack ear plugs.

We found the beds to be very hard and the bathroom inconveniently small. It is very easy to bash an elbow in the tiny shower (or accidentally adjust the output) and the bidet gets in the way when visiting the toilet.

The Air conditioning units are superb, though, so despite 30 degrees outside it was easy to cool off at the end of the day. The WiFi was reliable but not fast.

I have just returned from Chiavari and I'm eager to review the hotel because it is deserving of a lot of praise. The family owners and staff have been through a trying time following flooding in November but after a chic refurb, the hotel is now quite lovely.
Location is good and handy for the rail station for easy access to The Cinque Terra and Rapallo.
My room wasn't large but clean, airy and adequate. With so much to see in the area who wants to stay in the bedroom anyway?
Aldo cooks wonderfully and his wife,Anna is helpful and charming. Rogiero, Agnes, Matteo and Candy were superb in the restaurant.
I will return!

You are made to feel very welcome and all the staff are friendly and polite and with a good sense of humour, especially when the language barrier runs riot. Any small problem, they will solve it for you. The food, real Italian, was in our opinion excellent. A wide and varied menu. Breakfast was typically continental with a very wide choice. Internet in the bedrooms is available, but does fall off briefly at times. This is not a chain hotel but a family run one. It is full of character. We would return.

I loved this hotel. It's not great, it's not grand, it's not led by a brand, but what do you want from a hotel? Bedrooms are basic but ok. They're quiet and comfortable. If you go on holiday to spend all day in the hotel, don't go to the Stella del Mare, but if you want a great base from which to explore the Cinque Terre it's pretty good. Just a few minutes from the rail station and the promenade (and the old town) it's in a most excellent location. The staff are great - friendly and helpful. They have bikes to borrow! It's kind of old-fashioned, but it's kind of timeless, the stuff that makes great hotels great: feeling welcomed, feeling looked after, feeling well fed, having a good night's sleep, and feeling easy. Truly the star of the sea!

Room Tip: Just go there.

We too stayed at this hotel at the beginning of September and found it to be very tired and in need of some TLC. From talking with our fellow travellers it seemed that the allocation of rooms was a lottery with some of our party refusing to accept the room first offered. Our room on the second floor was very dingy, the decor and furnishings mismatched and lost in the 80's. The bathroom was so tight that our knees touched the facing wall when we sat on the loo. It appeared to us that a lot of money had been spent on the downstairs areas but none upstairs. However it was a welcoming hotel and the staff were friendly. We found it to be well placed for our expeditions along the coast and was close to the beach. The food was adequate, we were on a group holiday so had no choice over menu. Breakfasts were very dull but the evening meal presented us with some local dishes to try although the desserts were very disappointing. Considering that we were seeing luscious cakes in the bakers, a slice of dry Genoa cake was not well received by any of us. With a little effort and money this could become a fabulous place to stay.

Room Tip: Don't accept the first one offered and check the bathroom out too.
