I love to find restaurants that represent the character of a region. Le Scalette, so aptly named for the stairs that lead up to the "centro storico" does an excellent job providing an experience that is true to the concept of an authentic osteria. More importantly, the husband and wife team of Roberto & Agnese have created a wonderful atmosphere with a menu that reflects the tradition of "cacciatore" and the "pesce del lago". Add to this, pasta that is truly "made in the house" you have what we call in the states "a home run". The Pici with any of the house sauces is not to be missed, nor the gnocchi with a delicate sauce of lake fish. To begin, ask for an antipasto for a sampling of the salumeria and bruschetta that Umbria is known for. For second courses we love either the duck prepared in the style of "cacciatore" or the pork in a red wine sauce. For those adventuresome fish lovers, there is the carpe regina , a large carp, prepared in the style of porchette which basically means that it is loaded with the flavors of rosemary and wild fennel. For wine lovers, give yourself some time to survey the extensive collection of Tuscan and Umbrian wines that are displayed along the walls of the restaurant. Finally, I can not say enough about the warm welcome we receive at Le Scallette. To sum up, this is a restaurant we bring friends and guests to. It never disappoints and always lives up to its earned reputation as an authentic osteria in the green heart of Umbria.
