This hotel was a fantastic value for the money! We chose it as a convenient stopover on our way to and from the south of Italy (stayed twice, one night each), and were happily surprised at how modern and comfortable it was! Off street parking, great staff, nicely decorated, large variety of foods at breakfast (though many sweets as is normal in Italy), extremely accommodating and welcoming to our one and a half year old. (travel crib 5 Euro extra)
The neighborhood seemed a bit scary when we arrived on a Sunday night--everything closed, graffiti everywhere, few people around on the streets. The next morning, however, it was clear that this is a bustling, safe, REAL southern Italian community, and the locals don't seem to think twice about the graffiti. There is a great inexpensive pizzeria across the street to the left, and any shop you could possibly need is within walking distance-- good thing since the traffic on a weekday is crazy! The hotel is also convenient for a daytrip to Paestum, Salerno, Amalfi coast, Pompeii -- all within 30 to 45 minutes or so.
Our room was great: large according to European standards, comfortable bed, spotlessly clean, TV with some programming in English, a refrigerator, and a big modern bathroom! We LOVED the bathroom with its great shower, great water pressure and modern fixtures. (All of this is not necessarily common in the hotels WE can afford during high season in Italy!) The air conditioning worked extremely well, and we were able to control the temperature ourselves.
Overall, this hotel has all the amenities of a more expensive place at a very reasonable price. Though downtown Battipaglia is not pretty by any stretch of the imagination, the Hotel Palace was an unexpected highlight of our 3 week trip, and we highly recommend it as a one or two night stopover.
