Great location

Review of Hotel Rivé
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Mar 2024
We have just returned from a stay, booked with Crystal Ski.

The hotel is just across from the slopes and is so probably the best in this area of the resort for location if you are skiing. There are a couple of bar/restaurants within a few minutes walk (we only tried the fast food options which were ok,) and a pizza restaurant that was quite nice.

Rooms were sufficient - ours didn't have a great layout for space/plug socket access, but was clean enough. The beds are very hard, which suits me fine, but others commented on some poor nights sleep.

Spa - make sure you bring flip flops and a swimming cap for the pool or you will have to purchase these. Some of the literature stated an extra charge for the sauna etc. but nobody requested this - guests had access to the small pool (quite cold while we were there) with waterfalls and jets, sauna, steam room, and a couple of others. We used the facilities a couple of times but they were quite busy, and we really fancied a soak in a hot tub which is something they were missing.

Ski storage - free for guests in the garage under the hotel, a short walk from the slopes. Old/basic lockers, and some guests had issues with keys not working. Also no heating. We stored our rental skis there, but carried our boots to the room to dry out and seemed the safer option for our own property (nothing stopping none-guests from entering the room.) I'd consider hiring lockers from one of the ski rental stores in the area for something a bit nicer!

Staff - friendly and helpful. No issues. Some spoke better English than others. Were helpful when my husband was suffering with dental pain and had to visit a local dentist.

Food - we really enjoyed the dinner every evening. There was always a buffet of salad/veg/breads/cheeses etc. which I could have filled up on alone every evening. Then the following 2 courses were generally a choice between a meat, fish and vegetarian option. The meat options were mostly game/veal - but as I don't eat red meat, I found the fish and veg options generally very good, and the food always hot, and nicely presented. I wouldn't recommend for vegans as even the veggie options were very heavy on the cheese/dairy. Kids meals were also available. Desserts were help yourself from a table of yummy cakes and tarts etc. Breakfast was a bit more basic - pretty much a continental breakfast of bread/cheese/ham/spreads/fruit/eggs. Was the same every day so some variety would have been nice.

As we were on a budget, we only paid for water with dinner each evening, and purchased other drinks for our room from the local supermarket (about 20-25 min walk or catch a bus just across from the hotel.)

If I were to ski here again, I'd definitely consider staying in this hotel as it met all our requirements, was very convenient, and we enjoyed the food. We personally didn't hear music from the bar that has been commented on by others, except slightly on the Saturday night, but not at all late (we were not in a slope facing room.)

Nice looking hotel and the rooms are nice. Not 4 star hotel by any means. Doesn't offer any draught beers which is a disgrace as bottled beers are always twice as expensive. Food was good in an evening but breakfast hot food is terrible.
Needs a few tweaks and could be good. No subtle lighting, bad layout in dining room. No atmosphere and no background music.

Room tip: Overall bardonecchia is expensive, and not good value for money

Our family enjoyed our stay. The staff were particularly friendly, special mention to Tania & Alberto who provided excellent service in the restaurant, and the charming staff on the front desk and bar who spoke excellent English. The hotel was perfectly situated opposite the ski slopes and only a few metres to the ski hire shop and apres bars. During our stay we enjoyed hearty breakfasts, and 4 course evening meals. Our room & bathroom was spotlessly cleaned daily by a dedicated cleaning staff. We used the hotel spa several times, the cold plunge pool was particularly restorative of tired legs. The hotel bar was inviting, staffed by an efficient team who mixed the best Aperol Spritz in the town. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay again if visiting Bardo for a vacation. Crystal Ski guests 10-3-24 to 17-3-24.

Room tip: If you are loaded up with family luggage and arriving with Crystal then be sure to use the luggage trolleys on arrival/departure

Pros:

Great location next to the slopes and ski lockers provided in the basement.
Rooms are a good size with plenty of storage.
All areas nice and clean.
Food is okay with a decent choice at breakfast, you pick your starters and mains for dinner at breakfast time. Its a little odd because the main course is served without any sides eg no potato's, rice or side veg etc but although its a strange way of serving food I never went hungry.
The spa is nice but do make sure you take flip flops and a swim cap. I forgot to take flip flops and they charged me 4 euro for a pair of disposable ones that lasted about 5 minutes when I skidded in them and one broke.
The area felt very safe to walk around and some lovely shops on the main street.

Cons:

The beds are very hard and uncomfortable.
The men in the next room were very loud and inconsiderate and you could hear everything they were saying/singing.
Harolds Bar, a bar opposite the hotel. If your in a room facing the slopes all you will hear from this bar is loud boom boom boom music (not even good music). It starts early morning and doesn't stop until 1:30 am ish. People leaving the bar shouting and screaming so if you were lucky enough to get to sleep you will be woken up. At 1:15 am one night the music was turned to full blast it was louder than any gig I've ever been too. This bar ruins what is a lovely resort.

Room tip: Avoid rooms facing the slopes and don't forget your swim cap and flip flops if you want to use the spa.

Well located to the Campo Smith ski school starting point and lifts. Beds are hard if you like a softer variey. The cleaners work very hard, the rooms were cleaned daily to a high standard. Free buses just outside are great to get to town or to other ski areas. Easy train journey into Turin from Bardonecchia. It's a quiet area but brilliant for families with the alpine coaster, climbing wall etc just outside. Plenty of sledding to be done in the evenings too. Lovely atmosphere in the lobby before dinner with families enjoying card /boardgames. Great chance for children & adults to mingle. Haralds is a restaurant bar very close and is great for apres ski. I really don't think the wellness /gym area are promoted to how good they are - the lovely pool with jacuzzi, saunas x 2, igloo, hamamm, steam room - lovely way to end a day on the slopes. Great for families.

Room tip: If you like a peaceful room, request one at the front of the hotel
