Another wonderful stay - just seen the review from Wayne and agree with eveything he said.

Had a wonderful game drive with Conor.

Very sad to leave the tranquil surroundings of the Colonial and Molly, Conor and Marley.

Hello Marian and Brendan

Lovely to see you both again and to have the chance to say "au revoir".
We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope that The Colonial will always bring back happy memories for you when you think back to your Addo days. We wish you many happy days in Knysna before your return to the UK and hope that one day our paths will cross again.
We are going to take the opportunity of this review, if it wil lbe kindly post by Tripadvisor, to post our final response to all our wonderful guests who have supported us over the years, with Conor's, as always, last words!!!!!!!!
THE COLONIAL ON ARUNDEL – TIME TO SAY GOODBYE

To all our guests who have supported us over our twelve years of trading, especially those who have returned time and time again, retaliating with a fierce loyalty and a strong bond of friendship, a great big THANK YOU. Your support and resultant friendship has been a treasure way beyond monetary gain and be assured such associations will remain with Molly and I forever.

The Colonial started under very humble circumstances. This 1930 period home endured no small amount of neglect over the eighty seven years of its existence. It was certainly both a labor of love and of hope restoring her to her former glory. We tried to maintain the ‘period’ atmosphere in our décor and furnishings using our own family pieces in 90% of the house. It was with great pride that on so many occasions guests likened the home to that of Karen von Blixen’s of ‘Out of Africa’ fame. Some guests half expected to see Meryl Streep and Robert Redford sitting on the veranda listening to Mozart played on an old gramophone.
The garden, which had deteriorated to something so unkempt that one could hardly gaze at it with any measure of enjoyment, was transformed, not to some organized ‘Kew Gardens’ look alike, but to a place of wild serenity that attracts an enormous selection of wild birds.

For those who enjoyed adventures with me into the Addo Elephant National Park, I do hope that you were enlightened and informed. For many, these adventures were emotional experiences. I shall miss these excursions, where every day offered something new and unique.

It was with great pride that over the years as a result of so many of your positive reviews, The Colonial has consistently maintained a 9,5 out of 10 on Booking.com and has always ridden high on Tripadvisor, on occasion achieving levels within the top three B&B’s in the Eastern Cape. These achievements could never have been possible without the efforts of our team, Sipho, Busi and Lonki.

For those who remember, Zach our black Labrador, who played such an important ‘Public Relations’ role at the Colonial, and whose death was a heart-felt loss resulting in many months of deep emotion and sadness, we thought his place might never be filled. Marley, who arrived from a rescue centre, had large paw prints to fill, and he has done so admirably and with such love and gentleness. He is also taking ‘early’ retirement!

We are retreating from active service to the tourism industry at the end of February 2017, in favor of the quiet life. The Colonial will close, but is expected to be reborn under a different name, THE SILO’S ON ARUNDEL sometime around September 2017. The new look and overall presentation will be, I am sure, refreshing and exciting so I urge you to keep an eye on the Web for more information as it unfolds. The Silo’s will be managed by our daughter-in-law, Ansa, who will be efficiently assisted by Siphogazi (Sipho), Busi and Lonki, our old team that served you before. I have little doubt that the future will be exciting and original so please keep your eyes open for news.

Molly and I, as well as Marley, wish you farewell with good health and lashings of happiness for the future.

Alles gut und wunderbar!

Conor.

This was our second visit, and as expected it just gets better each time.

We had just travelled fron Natal where we had stayed at the Oyster Box, where every thing was superb.

We met Moly and Connor on arrival, they really are remarkable hosts and settled us into our beautiful suite. We had an early night and loved the sound of tractors and the noises of the farm, a reminder that we were away from the city, just charming.

We woke to the most amazing breakfast, creamy, delicious scrambled eggs on hot buttered toast, and every other condiment you could possibly want. Fresh orange juice and the best marmalade!

The main original house is just that... original, with beautiful furniture and polished antiques, beautifully kept and cool and soothing in atmosphere. After breakfast we had a dip in the lovely pool, just perfect, quiet and surrounded by beautiful gardens full of Clivia, Agapanthus and chirping birds...bliss!

We felt so safe, travelling in South Africa is a little scary, we were so thrilled to see that security was paramount, and that even our veranda doors and trellis were checked and locked nightly. We slept beautifully on comfortable beds knowing we were safe.

We so appreciated all the small touches, flavoured waters etc, so nice to have these small touches and not run off the mill, we were even given lip balm and tissues for our onward journey.

We were sad to sad good bye to Molly and Connor after 2 blissful days in paradise.
This exeperience was 5 star at 3 star prices.

We will be back soon!

It's always the place we head to if we have visitors or family staying in SA, and plan a trip to Addo. It never disappoints - and if anything gets better every visit. Thanks to Molly and Connor. Great game drive as ever. Very good new local restaurant too!

Room Tip: Fitzpatrick has lovely views over the garden

Excellent accommodation - spacious, comfortable, with much attention to detail and every need catered for. Beautifully located in lovely grounds amidst lemon orchards.
The hosts were most friendly and welcoming and provided valuable advice in advance on a range of safari trips, activities and restaurants in the area which helped immensely in our planning so we could take full advantage of our time there. Conor's safari trip in the Addo is not to be missed!

Hello Marie and John from a really very HOT Addo!!!!! And still no rain!
Thank you for your very kind review which you posted this week. We are so pleased that you found everything to your liking and enjoyed the peace and quiet of our lovely gardens surrounded by citrus orchards. We always like to give our guests some advance information on Addo, as unlike when you are in a big city, there are always limited seats available for game excursions etc and it is good to know that you have them all in place. I guess it also takes some of the hassle out of your stay and certainly allows you to enjoy 'the stress free zone'!! Conor is always so pleased to hear that guests have enjoyed his drives. He, as you know, does the game drives daily into the park and yet guests tell me he always makes them as passionate as if it was his first one to visit his much loved elephant!!!!
We hope that the warm memories of your SA stay will sustain you while you travel through the last days of your UK winter.
Kind regards Molly & Conor and our special boy Marley!

A very nice couple. Pleasant, helpful, warm and hospitable

The negatives are as follows:

Although there is a very extensive breakfast offering what was delivered was not of great quality. For example the toast was stale and the scrambled egg was "watery" and unseasoned

Although the house is "period" (and clearly advertised as such) inside the room it is dark and the furnishings are "tired" e.g. Old straw hat on wall, cheap plastic shower curtain, light pull cords everywhere

Although it clearly states that there is agricultural noise on a working farm - we did not fully appreciate that this would go on all night and nor did we expect someone to be going in and out of the kitchen just outside our bedroom window from 5am. This both mornings

Although it says there is swimming - it is really more of a dip-pool than anything you could seriously swim in !!

The gardens albeit nice could have done with some more work. Colour schemes were a bit awry and, frankly, the garden could have looked better. It is clean though which can not be said for the surrounds of the Addo elephant park. The rubbish in the area will dishearten you (obviously no fault of the hosts who we understand are doing what they can with the local community to resolve this)

I understand that all over Africa there are security concerns and owners wish to ensure there is no damage or loss suffered by them or their guests ..... but I found a locking door and a sliding metal grate excessive. My wife has concerns (for historical reasons) with exit in the event of fire. We wishes to leave the sliding metal gate covering the door unlocked but each evening someone relocked that.

Although we appreciate the gesture of tissues and lip balm travel pack on departure we would have preferred to have real bottles of water during our stay rather than the funky tasting ones from the hosts own supply.

I am loathe to write anything too harsh because Molly and Connor are such nice people. I am sure these sentiments have been shared by many of those that stayed there in the past. However I believe in the integrity of these sites to provide accurate feed-back. This is how we book our holidays, and we rely on accurate reviews from fellow travellers. I wrote a review on booking.com but got no opportunity to address Connors replies. I hope this review gives more clarity.

The reviews do not reflect this place accurately. It is absolutely not a 4*. It is a 3* with jolly nice hosts.

Hopefully they will have the opportunity to invest a little money into addressing some of the comments above.
