Lovely house, exactly as the pictures indicate.

Our group was 2 adults, 2 OAPs and 2 teenagers, and there was plenty of space; the house is bright, clean and airy, but still comfortable and cosy. Good Wifi signal and Sky box (maybe we're spoiled at home, and maybe it was because the living room is so big, but the TV could be a bit larger!).

Duncannon is about a 40-minute drive from the Rosslare ferry port. Directions given by the owner (Gabrielle) were good, BUT the house is not signposted or visible from the road, so it took us 10 minutes of driving up and down and asking neighbours before we found it.

Apart from that we settled in quickly and put up the snooker/pool table, which was well used for the whole week.

All facilities in the house worked well. There was a problem with one of the showers and it couldn't be used for the last few days, but there were spares to be shared, so not a big deal. Otherwise, hot water, cooker, dishwasher, washer-dryer, microwave, etc. were all good.

Two people in the group would have liked better quality mattresses but it didn't ruin their sleep. And there was a great hammock to put up in the garden!

As well as the pool table, Gabrielle and Fintan have put out a good selection of books, games and DVDs, so you're unlikely to be bored. There are also some children's wetsuits and boogie boards if you have kids who want to venture into the surf.

Duncannon beach stretches about a mile or so and is a great place to spend time. You can drive your car onto the beach all the way down from the village, so you don't have to worry about carrying a ton of stuff from a car park down to the beach.

However, be prepared if you have little ones or elderly people in your party. From the house, the nearest part of the beach is about a 15-20 minute walk along a country road with no pavement.

Then the main village and beach (with shops, restaurants and cafes) is an additional 1km / 10-15 minute walk from there. I was hoping it would be a short and easy walk from the house to Duncannon village but it isn't, so be prepared to drive or go for a little bit of a hike.

Nearest shops are in Ramsgrange (5 minute drive) and a bigger one at Wellington Bridge (15-minute drive).

We had some good day trips to local spots. Waterford is lovely and only a short journey, using the car ferry at Ballyhack (12 Euros return; frequent trips, roll-on / roll-off). Hook Lighthouse is pretty dramatic and worth a look. I didn't pay for the tour inside, but the landscape's free - and beautiful.

A day in Dublin was probably the highlight. 2-3 hours' drive, but the traffic was light and roads good - at least compared with the dreaded M25.

And I'd recommend visiting the Kennedy House near New Ross. It's only small, but has huge significance for local and international history.

Some little oddities about the stay. Household rubbish has to be taken to a token-operated compactor in Ramsgrange. 8 Euros for a token should give you enough time to get a couple of large rubbish sacks stuffed in there.

And on a more pleasant note, Brandy the neighbourhood dog (corgi?) was a regular visitor. He's very playful and loves some attention (he'll also walk down the lane with you to the beach), but doesn't object to being put outside at meal times or if you don't really like dogs. There are plenty of wild rabbits for him to chase outside anyway.

There's a working cattle farm next door, so there was a little noise of farm vehicles coming and going, but really nothing too bad. And if the wind changes direction, let's say you're more aware of it. But farming's the main local industry apart from tourism, so no complaints from us.

Of the local eateries we tried, The Hollow (seafood restaurant) was our favourite. Really great quality food and lovely service. Not cheap, but well worth the two trips we made there.

All in all, a really enjoyable stay. Gabrielle, if there were just a few things I'd recommend you changed, it would be putting a sign on the gate, putting a parasol with the garden table, and a bottle of milk in the fridge on arrival.

Otherwise, it was just about perfect!

Many thanks for your kind remarks and observations.
We will certainly consider putting a sign although usually the directions given are adequate.
Excellent suggestions for a larger TV and a parasol.
The system for rubbish disposal appears to work well, particularly in high season.
Many thanks again for your constructive remarks, and we hope to see you again sometime soon.

“Perfect house and location for multi generational family and 3 very happy dogs!”
Reviewed 20 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Our family had a wonderful stay at Clonsharragh Lodge. The house and gardens are perfectly maintained, clean and very welcoming. The kitchen is particularly lovely. The kids loved the pool table and the dogs loved the garden (including the very friendly neighbour's dog, Brandy!) The location of the house is great, very peaceful and yet very near to lots of spectacular beaches, interesting places to visit and good local amenities. The weather was surprisingly good during our stay and we made good use of the bbq. Definitely a house our family would return to.

“Wonderful!”
Reviewed 29 July 2014 for a stay in July 2014

The property had plenty of room and catered for a large family, set in beautiful gardens and was very well equipped with everything! It was very clean and tidy upon arrival and also offered books, dvds, a folding pool table and WiFi. The location was perfect for us as it was on a quiet road with a 10-15 minute walk downhill to long, sandy beach at the beautiful Duncannon and play-park. Lots to see and do in the area; Duncannon Fort/ Hook Head Lighthouse/ Tintern Abbey/ Wexford town and much more!

The balcony and upstairs sash windows were not child-friendly areas but a stair-gate if provided, would remedy this.

Overall, a great holiday home, I would have no hesitation in recommending this property and would consider returning again. Deposit was returned promptly.

“Great house, lovely location”

We have stayed in Clonsharragh Lodge for 2 successive years. It is a lovely, well proportioned house with spacious gardens, and amply suitable for our group of six adults and five small children. The large kitchen/dining room with its access to the garden provided exactly as the song says..'Summertime, when the living is easy.'! The ambience is bright and warm and all our needs were well provided for including Wi Fi, a selection of videos & books and access to Sky TV.
The house is located about one kilometre from Duncannon and its beautiful beach which is one of many in the region. The beach has the added benefit of being able to bring the car onto the beach, especially with young children. Shops, restaurants, bars & children's playground are all within easy distance. It is also a great location for trips to places like Hook Head, JFK Aboretum & Homestead, Kilmokea House & Gardens, Johnstown House and Wexford. Waterford is within easy distance via the ferry from nearby Ballyhack to Passage East.
All in all a great house for families or groups, with easy access to a variety of activities and facilities in the region.
