We booked this holiday over two months ago and are regular holiday cottage renters. Our previous experience has been positive - this experience I would not want anyone to encounter. We booked Mill View Cottage in Harpley to stay with our two dogs and enjoy walks in the peace and quiet of Norfolk. The holiday was to relax and unwind - the day we arrived ruined all of that. We live on the South Coast of England and left early to avoid traffic - it is a 4 hour drive for us and we arrived early. We got to the property earlier than expected and this has never been a problem before - usually properties are cleaned and made good first thing. Ours was still dirty with towels in the bath and the beds unmade. We rang the people we booked with - "Holidacottages" and spoke to a lady. She assured us not to worry as there was still one and a half hours until the time we had arranged to arrive. No attempt was made by her to contact the owner. We had to drive around for an hour and then arrived back. There was a car outside so we assumed that the property was being cleaned. We took our dogs for a walk locally and then returned to the cottage at 3.30 p.m. looking forward to a glass of wine and a relax only to find.... the property still uncleaned. This was hugely annoying and stressful. we rang the agency again and complained. The tried to pass the buck and told us to call the owner - I did this twice but got no reply. At a third attempt we got through and she hadn't a clue as to what had happened. She said she would call back having contacted her cleaners. We heard nothing for several minutes so I again called Holidaycottages. again they tried to pass the responsibility to the owner. By now it was 4.20p.m. and we had been on the road since 9.00 a.m. with two dogs. On my insistence I told "Adam" that HE was to contact the owner and ascertain when the property would be cleaned and ready for occupation. We were told it would be ready by 5.15 p.m. - two and a half hours after it was supposed to be and unfortunately the grass wouldn't be cut. We were told to "go and get something to eat" (what with two dogs in tow - really) and that they would pay us £50.00 as a refund. By this time we were stressed, annoyed and felt that our holiday was ruined before it had started. Faced with a week in a cottage which by then we were disillusioned with the prospect of unreliable service we turned around and returned home. We have been given the reassurance of a full refund and £50 compensation but it in no way compensates for 12 hours on the road with two dogs, the loss of a day in our lives and the stress incurred. We are considering legal action in the small claims court as a further means of redress, A simple appalling experience I would not want anyone else to experience.
