“A lovely walk on a lovely day with stunning views over Cheshire”

Owner description: Discover Tegg's Nose Country Park and experience Cheshire's wild hill country where rock dominates the landscape. Dry stone walls and sturdy barns add to the dramatic character of the steeply sided valleys while many of the hill tops are pitted with old quarries. Quarrying was certainly happening at Tegg's Nose in the 1500's and continued until 1955. Men blasted, hammered, hacked and chiselled away at the rock in harsh conditions for low wages. Today nature has softened the scars of industry and there is plenty to see at Tegg's whatever time of year. You don't have to go far to enjoy exhilarating views over the Cheshire Plain and on a clear day you can see Liverpool's cathedrals and Welsh hills beyond. The car park provides an excellent base for numerous walks and throughout the year there are many events taking place at the visitor centre.

We went here during the Easter holidays and on a VERY bright and sunny day. I have lived locally all my life and ashamed that I have never been here before. We took our dog along the 'Trail' walk, which is the longer of the two on the free map available from the Cafe. The Cafe, by the way, is situated at the car park, with free toilets available there too. The cafe is dog-friendly. The car park is pay-and-display and the machine takes contactless as well as coins.
The wall took us through bracken and past a disused quarry - and also some historical quarry equipment as a sort of outdoor museum (very quirky and pleasant to come across) - and then down and down and down to the reservoir! The views are simply stunning and we took hundreds of photos. We met quite a few people but it was by no means busy. There were lots of signs warning of grazing cattle and sheep but we didn't come across any and our dog was off the lead all the way around. He absolutely loved it!
The Trail is not for the faint-hearted as the downhill is very rough and the uphill is just a long slog, but we will be back - very soon!

We visited on a wet Monday morning and got a map from the very helpful guy in the cafe. We intended to take the short walk (about 50 minutes) as we were limited on time but we didn't manage to follow the signposts very well so ended up detouring but that can be part of the fun. We plan to return again in the summer to do the longer walk and try the cafe.

Tegg's nose is on the old Buxton Road out of Macclesfield and offers several good walks both circular and linear some great views and connects to Macclesfield Forrest for a longer walk.
the park itself was originally a stone quary and has some old traditional tools used to cut and shape stone
The one thing that spoils it is Cheshire East charges for parking
There is a tea room there too

Thank you for the detailed review. Glad you enjoyed your visit. The car parking fee comes back to the Ranger Service and supports the country park and it's continual improvement.

Just stopped by for tea and cake. A decent cuppa and a huge chuck of delicious cake, plenty of choice.

Just love walking up here. Great space to let the dogs off and stroll around. The parking is easy and you have a number of different routes to take.
