I stopped by for fish and chips and a pint of the local Lancaster ale. Both were very nice and the service was excellent. Returned in the evening for a few drinks with friends and again enjoyed he atmosphere.

Went to The Palatine today Sunday 8th October, recommend to us by a family friend.
We waited at the empty bar for about 5 minutes, then I went in search of a staff member, found a waitress upstairs, she said she was on her own but eventually came down and served our drinks, we got menus and she said sit at any table up stairs, we sat down and studied the menu and decided what to have, a table of eight left, still no sign of our order being taken, another couple got their drinks, still no service, we waited, and waited, finished our drinks and decided after 20 minutes to leave! On going downstairs there were 3 members of staff at the back door having " a fag break" not good customer service to me! We paid our bar tab, ( perhaps we should've just left, but that would've been dishonest) . We will not be back in the future, perhaps some staff training needed at The Palatine?

Thank Eric B

Firstly I'd like to apologise

That's not the normal standered of service we provide at the Palatine

With regret you did come in on a day when two members of my staff and not turned in for there shift so the person that was on shift was put under undue pressure.

If your ever in the area again please give us a call and book a table for a meal on me

My apologies again

Been here quite a few times as the food is fab! We are making out way through the menu each time we go and we haven't had a bad meal yet and service is fast considering it's all cooked fresh, it's not your typical pub where they heat up in microwaves. Service was a little slower on our last visit but I believe they are running the kitchen with 1 chef until they can hire another as well so considering there's 1 chef food was fast and tasty, much better than some places with lots of kitchen staff! It's a very friendly pub suitable for couples/family/friends. Not many seats downstairs though especially when the live bands are on. All in all a fab pub with fab restaurant quality food. Plus they have a 5 star food hygiene rating, I always check wherever I eat.

had a couple of nice real ales in here last week, the Lancaster was nice as was the Suffolk county from the nethergate brewery. reasonably priced but sure the place is busy at night as this was only about 4.30pm. prices were not to high but staff seemed to prefer to be on their mobiles etc.

We went for dinner and had pitta bread & hummus to start then pizza and hotpot for mains. Although the waitress was very nice and attentive and the beer was good, the food was on the disappointing side.
Firstly the salad garnish on the starter was brown, slightly slimy and had definitely seen better days. Unfortunately the sliced pitta was piled on top of it.
The pizza was disappointing, especially for somewhere claiming to have an Italian pizza oven. Although the dough was good, the pizza sauce was too thick and tasted like tomato puree and the kitchen had either run out of or didn't use mozerella as the pizza was covered in cheddar cheese. The veggies on the pizza must have gone on raw as they were a combination of not cooked and burnt in the oven. With more attention to detail this could have been a good pizza but unfortunately it fell flat on its face and was like a pizza made in a home economics classroom.
The hotpot wasn't bad, although the lamb was very fatty. It also felt like the sautéed potatoes had been cooked in a pan with a lot of oil which had then been poured over the lamb stew. The result was about a centimeter of oil sitting under the potatoes on top of the lamb which wasn't the nicest experience. The side vegetables were boiled broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Unfortunately the broccoli had seen better days and was a little bit too yellow to appear completely healthy.
All in all, the food was disappointing against the expectation created by good reviews on here. Although the beer and staff were very nice, the food just wasn't up to scratch.
