Description: The pretty village of Dunkeswell isn't the first place you'd expect to find an award-winning Indian restaurant, but with the buzz surrounding Viceroy Indian Restaurant at the moment, I decided to head down to see what all the fuss was about.Greeted at the door and whisked straight to an elegantly laid table, what hit me first was the 'sparkle' of Viceroy. Soft lighting and flickering candles were perfectly complemented by contemporary soft furnishings and comfy booth seating, and crispy poppadoms with a selection of yummy dips kept us entertained while we cast our eyes over the menu. Now, it's not easy taking someone who claims a dislike for Indian food to an Indian restaurant, so the challenge was on to test the tastebuds of my companion and open her up to the culinary world she'd been missing. To help with this, we started with the chef's signature starter - crispy mixed vegetables cooked with chat masala sauce, topped with raita and fresh pomegranate. The choice of Bangladeshi specialities on the menu includes classics such as tandoori, balti and biryani, along with dishes that are unique to the Viceroy. Though I wished I could squeeze in more than one, I chose to sample one of Viceroy's special recommendations, the tandoori king prawn makhani. Beautifully garnished to resemble a blooming flower, it is a feast for both the eyes and the tastebuds. My companion, fearful of anything too exotic, feasted upon lightly spiced butter chicken (£8.95) and now has a new-found admiration for Indian cuisine. Many customers take advantage of the chef's 13 or so years of experience and ask for a dish to be created according to their particular preferences. It is this customer care and satisfaction, along with the absolute dedication to detail and presentation that makes the Viceroy so special. With a takeaway delivery service, Sunday eat-as-much-as-you-like buffet and Tuesday gourmet evening to boot, there's every reason to believe the hype; I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Strange out of the way industrial type estate within an estate but well worth the effort as provides some of the best genuine indian cuisine.
From pickled shallots with the poppadoms to the veg stuffed nan which was deliciously light and crispy.
The lamb biryani was packed with tender lamb and the rice delicately flavoured. The curry sauce was packed with veg but only criticism was could do with more sauce. The croc tears chicken starter was beautifully balanced with sour and sweet highly recommended. Tarka Dal was full on with garlic and flavour as was the sag allooo potatoes and spinach side.

The tiger beer was slightly expensive at 6 gbp a pint but lovely beer.

The service was excellent; attentive but discreet.

The ambience was lacking as open plan with high ceilings making it echoing and seemed austere although very contemporary and spotlessly clean.

Nothing in the area including Honiton comes near. Very impressed and will be using takeaway in future, says will deliver to Honiton for 2gbp extra.
Highly recommended.

Ate here while on holiday - not somewhere you would find in passing as it is off the main road on a housing estate and only found with the aid of Trip Advisor and Google Maps.

The restaurant was empty when we arrived, and only one couple came in while we were there. As someone has commented in a previous review, the staff hovered a bit as they had nothing else to do and pounced to clear the table the second the fork touched the plate which I don't like. That said, they were polite enough.

The food also gets mixed reviews. Mine was tasty but not exciting, and my husband had the same. He had digestive issues the next day, but I was OK. My son was not impressed - he works in a n Indian restaurant and thought there was something not quite right with this one. He was also feeling the consequences the next day.

Not somewhere we will be eating at again.

Went here for the buffet or whatever they call it, first of all got told by a waiter who's english was very poor that they do not do it on a sunday. yet the menu he gave said it did! Great start!
Then the manager came over and asked if we can pay in cash as there is no internet up in dunkeswell so they cannot take card payments! Yet there I was, using the internet on my phone!
So ordered the buffet meals and childrens chips and chicken nuggets, £6.95 for that! Christ!
Starter came out, which was very small in quantity but tasted nice, then the main dishes came out! No side order with one, yet was ordered as you had to as part of the meal! Got told we didn't, again waiter with communication issues.
Main meal? Fished around for the meat! hardly any at all! Sauce was nice, but literally 3 pieces of small whatever meat it was!
Had two drinks, £4.95 I believe for a bottle of Tiger!
Got the bill and they had charged us for each individual dish, rather than the £14.95 it should of been, oh and wasn't allowed our desserts which was part of the deal!
Now next day, not been well at all with stomach problems!
Been here for takeaway and had problems with portions, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, will somebody put a chinese restaurant here or close by!!

This place was so nice it looks like an industrial building, and when it's quiet it can be cold but as it fills up and it does fill up, the atmosphere and temperature gets very pleasant.
The food is absolutely amazing can be slow with service but most of it is cooked to order so takes time but it's well worth the wait.
