Ilfracombe is not unlike many other English coastal resorts. You get the feeling its best days may be behind it and there are numerous private hotels which look frankly pretty run down. Not sure of its tourist demographics but there seemed to be coach parties of pensioners being delivered to fawlty towers/ old fashioned accommodation.
Not so the Woodlands. It was recommended by Tripadvisor and we had a very comfortable night there. Its a private B&B (don't let that put you off) in a quiet road 15 minutes walk downhill to the centre and harbour. Its immaculately clean and the bedroom was fine with very comfortable beds and bedding. En-Suite was small but again immaculate with ample hot water and quality shower gels etc. Décor throughout was up to date and the bonus of a tasty freshly cooked breakfast was very well received.Free off road parking was another plus and the proprietor was friendly and most helpful.
So unless you are perfectly happy visiting hotels that time forgot, consider the Woodlands - Very nice, very clean and very reasonable.More
