My family come from the area so I know the town very well but I hadn't stayed in Ilfracombe for a very long time. The town lacks high quality (4*+) accommodation so I chose this hotel on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews with some trepidation. I was very pleasantly surprised - we had a refurbished Deluxe Queen room which was very nicely decorated and furnished to a good standard. Breakfast was cheerfully served and of a good standard and varied menu. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful including the owner who was on reception when we arrived. i wasn't surprised to be charged on arrival - many hotels now even charge in advance! - and was pleased they took Amex. The owner helpfully explained the plans for completing the refurb of all rooms over the next couple of years. This will make the Carlton a great place to stay, Ilfracombe has lots to offer and it's nice to wander around in the evening and grab a meal or a drink or two.
Parking was somewhat tight but not a problem and there is lots of alternative parking around.
Would highly recommend but, if you can, stay in the refurbed rooms which are very good value for money.More
