“13th Family adventure to the Highlands”

We had a wonderful week in Glentromie Lodge, it is full of character and charm on both the outside and in, with all fascinating pictures, period furniture and lots rooms to explore, The kitchen was one of our focal points to gather of an evening with everyone helping prepare and cook the food using the Aga, and the open fire adding to the atmosphere. There was plenty of room for every one to have their own space and all the bed rooms are large. There are plenty of walks from the Lodge to do during the day.
The Lodge has a wonderful feeling of remoteness but is only 2 miles down an estate road which was covered in snow when we arrived and added to the excitement and adventure of getting to the lodge.
All in all we had a fantastic time both in the lodge and the local area.
Clan Newcombe.

“Charming house, tricky access road”
Reviewed 18 February 2016 for a stay in February 2016

Recently returned from a 4 night stay at this lodge. It is HUGE- 15 of us comfortably accommodated and plenty of nooks and crannies to disappear in. It is grand in some respects- ye olde world painted portraits hanging from walls, great long dining table that we really enjoyed and even a four poster better in the master bedroom! But a house also clearly challenging in terms of upkeep and keeping warm. Having said that, it is well kitted out with most mod cons- specially the kitchen and the DVD room to the kids delight. (Showers, if you want one, are through detachable rubber shower heads sitting in deep old bathtubs!)

However, what you really need to know is that the access in the last few miles is a narrow, extremely poorly kept private road. Potholes were numerous and often deep, making for a bumpy and hairy arrival in the gloom. When the snow fell, the road became treacherous- 2 out of our 4 cars ended up off the road, scuppering plans for skiing the next day, which was the main purpose of the trip! In summary, be prepared for a very slow and bumpy last few miles and if you're coming in winter, it's best to have at least winter tyres or maybe even snow chains as one of the cars did have winter tyres and didn't quite make it in the snow and had to be abandoned half-way!

We had a great time in and around the lodge (on foot or sledge) but the road, the road!

Management Response

The Glen road is not owned by Glentromie so our hands have been tied for some years with regards to maintenance for access, but brilliant news is that the road is now being resurfaced in Tarmac! Half of the two mile stretch is now complete and the work is ongoing this spring! Hooray for all !!
