The cottage is a couple of minutes walk from the Ruthven Barracks which are impressive and interesting to visit. You can also walk into Kingussie quite easily which means you can have a few drinks with a meal out if you want to. The kitchen is a good size with everything needed to cook a nice meal - we self catered on all but one night. The Hall is great for leaving your wet coats and rucksacks which you will probably need to do at least once. The cottage was immaculately clean on arrival and had lots of storage space in the bedrooms and sufficient space to put things in the shower rooms. The showers were good and there was always hot water when we needed it. The owners are relaxed and friendly and left us some very tasty biscuits and tea/coffee on our arrival. We enjoyed watching all the birds on the feeders outside and the rabbits in the garden, one of which came right up onto the patio. We would definitely stay here again if we were revisiting the Cairngorms.
The location of this cottage is excellent. It is close to Ruthven barracks in a rural situation yet easy walking distance to Kingussie. From the patio or lounge we could watch the sheep and lambs and rabbits and numerous birds, both flying over and visiting the feeders. From the patio we watched oystercatcher, curlew, mallard, red legged partridge, Siskin, chaffinch, great and blue tits, jackdaw and great spotted woodpecker to name a few. Also there were swallows and starling nesting. We had rabbits on the patio at night and mallard in the day. Great for nature lovers. The cottage was very well equipped and spotless with everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and the cottage was spacious and well maintained. We enjoyed a daily game of table tennis too. Our hosts were very welcoming and gave us expert guidance on the walking in the area. The recommended walks were really good- local knowledge goes a long way in helping you to plan your day. This was in addition to the folder of suggestions. There was also a book for guests to put their suggestions and tips in which was a good idea. This was one of the best cottages we have every stayed in with excellent hosts.
We had a fantastic holiday with our two young boys, based in Spindrift Cottage. We didn't quite have a full week, so thought we'd need to find a hotel, but the cottage worked out far better value and offered more comfort, space and flexibility. The guest book is stuffed full of comments from people who have stayed more than once- I can see why.
What a great area! There is so much to do within easy reach of Kingussie, and cold weather did nothing to derail any plans. The Highland Folk Museum, the Highland Wildlife Centre, Landmark, cake at the Potting Shed, lunch at the Mountain Cafe, and more stunning forest and lochside walks than you could ever squeeze into one holiday.
The cottage was perfect - not least because Judy and Jules gave us such a warm welcome and are so enthusiastic themselves about the area. Spindrift is clean, warm, well equipped and comfortable. The room next door (shared with the other cottage) has a table tennis table with the boys enjoyed, access to laundry facilities, and several adult bikes available to guests.
We had a blast. As we pulled out of the driveway at the end of the trip, the kids yelled "we'll be back!" Hope they're right!
Just outside Kinguissie with the striking ruins of Ruthven Barracks on the doorstep. Second time staying here for us (family of 4) and still loads to do within a short drive or bike ride. A quick walk from the cottage will get you to the Baracks and a bit further gets you to the RSPB hides.
Sundowner is immaculate, quiet and very well situated. Kingussie is within walking distance ( station too). We thought the cottage was extremely well presented, warm and cosy with all equipment we could want. There is a lovely little terrace overlooking the garden. We would recommend it .
