Owner description: Durham Cathedral has been a place of worship, welcome and hospitality for almost one thousand years. We rely on donations, and we suggest you give £3 per person to support the Cathedral's future. Located at the heart of the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site, Durham Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe. Built in 1093, the Cathedral is famous as the Shrine of St Cuthbert and the resting place of the Venerable Bede. Durham Cathedral also boasts the most intact surviving set of medieval monastic buildings in the UK. These spectacular spaces house Open Treasure, a world-class visitor experience which reveals the remarkable story of Durham Cathedral and its incredible collections through temporary and permanent exhibits for visitors of all ages. This is a must see while in Durham. The cathedral itself is stunningly beautiful let alone the very interesting story of its origin... suffice to give hints that goes back to Lindisfarne and the monks and the Vikings... go see for yourself. Very friendly staff in the church!!! Even very welcome towards the children, with all sorts of games and picture treasure hunt etc which made the trip all the more interesting to the whole family.
This is a splendid sight you do not want to miss when in the area.

The Cathedral is a must see when visiting Durham. It is beautiful. We visited over Easter and caught the Easter Sunday service which was lovely. Re-visited again a couple of days later so that we could have a good look around and appreciate the architecture. The treasure exhibition is well worth a visit whilst you are there as is the cafe which serves everything from a Sunday lunch to a scone and tea. A must see.

This relates mainly to the Open Treasures exhibition. We had planned a guided tour but the rather snooty young lady on the desk said quite dismissively that there were none. She did not offer us the self guided tour leaflet. So we went to the Open Treasures exhibition. In summary it is not worth the money. For the price there is not a huge amount to see, and some of it had previously been free to view anyway. On top of that the (volunteer?) staff kept you under constant scutiny which was rather offputting. They were stationed at every turn so you were always being watched. I cannot recommend.

I thought it will be similar to York cathedral... how wrong I was!!!! Durham cathedral is amazingly diffetent, beautiful in its simple bare walls and columns... if you visit Durham you must see it. It is an unforgetable experience.

A very interesting and beautiful cathedral. It has very special atmosphere. Very moving. It also has a treasures exhibition. St cuthberts shrine is here alongside artefacts of his life in the treasure exhibition. Cafe, shop and toilets. We went early so very quiet.
