“Beautiful cottages in a stunningly beautiful part of the world”
Reviewed 8 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

I've always loved Upper Teesdale but never thought to stay on holiday. This is a beautiful area. Villages are as beautiful as the Cotswolds but no one has ever heard of them outside the North East. Huge amount of industrial heritage - lead mining / now healed and blended into the landscape and plenty of "big house/ big estate" history if you like that.

The cottages are beautiful. Pool/ spa bath/ gym / games room is a beautiful facility. Gorgon and new. The only place I've ever stayed where the pool temperature is so perfect there is no angst going from jacuzzi to pool!

Bikes to borrow ( can't ride a bike but was tempted to learn), free range eggs to buy - leave your money in the box - and lovely walks way marked with arrows. The river Balder was a much more substantial river than I expected it to be.

Cottage was Excellent. Extremely comfortable beds. Loads of useful extras
Ike full washing up liquid, cooking oil etc. all the stuff you forget to take! Wifi works well. I have never stayed in a cottage that was such good value. Used to paying at least £200 a week more for these facilities in places that are not nearly as fabulous as Baldersdale/ Teesdale.

the cottage and location was lovely, inside the cottage was definitely home from home and every need was catered for, from the kitchen, all utensils and even cooking oil and other items you wouldnt normally expect. tv,dvd and vcr and radios. books galore... in case you did get bored.
my only disappointment was that i was under the impression from the write up that east briscoe was on 14acres of land which i had hoped to explore.
we went as a couple with our 2 dogs who we consider family and also under the impression that this was a dog friendly environment. it was not and the owners clearly didnt care for or understand dogs.we were basically in a no go area for dogs due to 'the other wildlife there'
i understand and respect that dogs must be kept on leads under circumstances with sheep/lambs etc but to keep them on leads whilst sat outside the front of our little holiday home was ridiculous.
also the wooded area we were informed was a no go area for dogs as they would disturb the wildlife.
we ended up having to go out for days in order for the dogs to have a run out.
so my recomendation to others is yes lovely cottage and area but not for dog owners.

“A Real Home from Home”

My husband and I have just returned from a week spent in Barn Cottage with our black labrador Bonnie. The location of this cottage is absolutely stunning and we were easily able to visit family in Durham city (50 mins), the Lake District (1 hour to Ullswater) and the Yorkshire dales (30mins). There are also any number of wonderful places to visit in the immediate vicinity from Barnard Castle, Baldersdale Reservoirs, the home of Hannah Hauxwell and we spent a lovely day walking along the Tees watching the kayaks at Low and High Force waterfalls. This last walk was followed by a magnificent Sunday lunch at the Rose and Crown, Romaldskirk, just a couple of miles from the cottage. The local pub in Cotherstone (The Fox & Hounds) does a great take out fish & chips on a Tuesday, although because of the dog we did not try their eat in menu.

The cottage itself was wonderful! It was warm, clean and cosy and so well equipped even down to teabags, coffee and condiments. There was even free wifi. A tea tray and homemade biscuits greeted our arrival and there were complimentary eggs laid by the owners' hens. Further supplies could be purchased at a very reasonable price from the wash house in the grounds. These were even labelled as to which day they had been laid. There were also homemade preserves for sale and lots of herbs in the veggie garden.

Barn Cottage is one of several cottages and they all looked every bit as lovely as ours although we did not actually look inside.

Our Bonnie was made welcome and although she had to be on a lead on the estate, a field was set aside for her to run off the lead. There were so many walks in the area though we only used the field in the morning and evening.

Barn Cottage was a haven of peace and tranquility with fields of sheep with their lambs peering in the dining room window and chickens at the front door and looking in at the sitting room window.

We did not have children with us but there was a lovely play area for the children complete with sandpit.

Chris and Emma were very helpful and welcoming but completely unobtrusive. This estate of lovely cottages is beautifully managed and run with an eye to the environment. Recycling is easily managed here.

We will definitely be back as one week was not anywhere near enough to explore the area and we would definitely recommend this area and this cottage to our friends.

“Fantastic Cottage”

We stayed christmas week at Barn Cottage with our 4 year old and Dog, facilities in the cottage are excellent, the fun to be had on the farm is great; walking, trampoline, feeding hens, swings, streams etc etc....
Any problems the owners are on hand to sort, so nothing gets overlooked.
Highly recommend this place to stay in a fabulous part of the country.
Nearby quaint villages, and towns to browse, farm parks, etc etc and of course the beautiful countryside.
