The Roman Camp markets itself as having 15 beautifully appointed rooms but, from our recent experience, this is not the case.

We were in the “Bears Den” and whilst the bathroom was modern and well equipped with a cascade shower and spa bath the room itself, whilst comfortable, was tired and in dire need of renovation. The sparse furniture was basic and not in keeping with the rest of the hotel which has oodles of history and character.

The grounds are extensive leading down to the river Teith but the large walled garden is mainly overgrown and unkempt.

There are a few basic flaws which you would not expect in such a prestigious hotel. These were brought to the attention of reception but were never addressed. The towel rail in the bathroom never heated up for the duration of our stay and the WiFi in our room was very weak and constantly dropped out. My partner forgot to pack her shower cap but unfortunately the hotel could not provide a complimentary one.

The star of the Roman Camp is the quality of the food. Dinner was a 5 Course tasting menu which was delicious and one of the best we have experienced. The quality, presentation and flavours of the food was superb and the service was first class. Compliments to the very talented chef and his team.

Absolutely gorgeous.

Perfect location, close to Main Street. You feel like you're back to 19th Century. Service is perfect.

We had a cozy time, sipping whisky by the fire...

Rooms were large. Dinner and breakfast were excellent !

Last but not least, easy parking and a lovely river to breathe after a long day hiking...

Pleasant way to spend an afternoon after a walk on a blustery September day.
Lovely old hotel and gardens with nice outlook towards the river.
Afternoon tea was lovely and staff pleasant.
Would visit again.

Visited here for a friend's wedding reception, the hotel is immaculate with period rooms very (Barbara Cartland if you like).
Loads of different rooms to lounge in and a reasonably priced bar and attentive staff.
Good sized reception room with dance floor.
Live band were awesome and silent disco was great fun.
Would totally recommend The Roman Camp hotel for a romantic getaway.

This hotel is an old house that has been done up. The focus is on developing a service culture and a solid quality offering according to the very chatty receptionist who showed us to our room. We arrived later in the day and only had one night, but this is the sort of place you could easily stay for a few nights as Callandar is a lovely little town. We ate in the garden buffet because the restaurant had x number of courses at a ridiculous price and we were not all that hungry. The bistro food was great and light and quick (and cheaper). Wait staff were young (international) and very friendly (and got captured by a chatty American so it was hard to get their attention) and service was relatively fast.
Our room was spacious, very ornate furnishings (somewhat tired), but the best shower I had had in 3 weeks of hotels (oh yes, power shower) and lovely toiletries (solid soap - yippee!). Breakfast was great but served in the dining room and to order - with all the guests spread out on separate tables and talking quietly in this huge room with damask serviettes etc. - so not entirely comfortable (we did not have kids but 3 tables worth did). Something 'serve yourself' buffet style would work so much better!!
There is a delightful formal garden behind the Garden Buffet and a lovely river at the rear of the property so have a walk around. The location is fabulous.
