“Really excellent food”
Reviewed 14 February 2012

An excellent lunch in very pleasant surroundings and friendly service.

The food was freshly cooked and the rib-eye steaks were very tender and cooked to perfection.

Will go again

Family wedding 15 minutes away led to us booking a one night stay at this wonderful 400 year old Inn. We were sorry we only had time for B+B. Breakfast was delicious and the Cromwell Suite was absolutely wonderful. A venue steeped in history. We can recommend this lovely place to stay in the heart of Hay on Wye, service was excellent, warm and friendly.

Room Tip: I didn't see the other rooms but if returning would definitely choose the Cromwell Suite again...

Just back from a delightful weekend break at the Old Black Lion Inn at Hay-on-Wye with my wife and son. We had a twin room (Room 10) on the ground floor in a modern annexe just across from the Inn whereas my son had a single room (room 5) with its own private bathroom along the corridor in the old Inn-both very comfortable-Room 10 has been relatively recently re-furbished with a modern compact en-suite. The room was lovely and warm on arrival on a cold winter's afternoon (not always the case in much more expensive properties).
We eat at the Inn both evenings in the lovely atmospheric bar with its scrubbed pine tables and cosy ambience and absolutely NO musak! Food was excellent and professionally served-we had a celebratory dinner with my cousin and wife on the last evening and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, including my cousins wife who is a vegetarian. There are a range of draught beers available including Black Lion Ale.
Breakfast is served in a seperate dining room overlooking a patio and is freshly prepared and cooked to order including traditional english using good quality ingredients, and grilled Manx Kippers, with choice of cereals/porridge/muesli.
This Inn is under the direct supervision of the resident proprietor and it shows.
There is a private car park and its location adjacent to the fascinating second-hand bookshops and antique shops of Hay-on-Wye is ideal.
We have tried all the other options in Hay-on-Wye over a number of years and keep coming back to the Old Black Lion as represting good value for money combined with a lovely ambience and comfortable accommodation.

Room Tip: There are 4 rooms in the modern annexe and 6 in the old Inn-take your pick.

This pub is situated on one side of Hay, but since it only takes 5 minutes to walk to the other side, it is in a very convenient location. There is an adjacent car park, which is almost essential in Hay, especially during busy periods. The owner and staff were very friendly and made us welcome. The pub and our bedroom were very clean and warm. The ensuite was basic but as expected. Although we had a roadside room (No 2), the roads were very quiet so there was no night time disturbance. This room is also above the bar area and alhough there is no sound proofing, the pleasant tone of the conversations below hardly disturbed us. And of course, there was silence when the pub closed. Breakfast here is a delight, with an excellent choice; the full English breakfast alone is worth a return visit.

We booked this pub to stay in for a local festival event. At £90 for two including breakfast it fitted our bill. We didnt eat in the pub so I can't comment on that - but it's a great location and the pub is lively enough. Old world room with sloping floor, poor sound insulation, and a basic shower room - but comfy enough!

Nestled within the market town of Hay-on-Wye, this colourful 17th Century Inn exudes historical charm and atmosphere offering quality home-cooked food, luxury accommodation and free Wi-Fi and parking. With parts of the original building dating as far back as the 1300’s, the Hotel subtly blends the elegance and whimsy of the past with the comfort and convenience of the present. Sympathetically refurbished, exposed timber beams and roaring log fires help to cultivate a homely environment and a famously warm welcome. The Inn features 10 high quality en-suite bedrooms, all of which are individually and tastefully decorated in a style reminiscent of the buildings historic past. All rooms include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TV, hairdryer, direct dial telephone and tea & coffee making facilities. They offer a choice of Single, Double, Twin and Superior room options. The Old Black Lion is renowned for the quality of its food and has received a host of rewards and accolades including a coveted AA Rosette. The menus, which are changed frequently, use only the best of British produce wherever possible including locally reared meat, fresh seafood from Cornwall and seasonal vegetables. The oak timbered bar with its scrubbed pine tables and comfy arm chairs is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the fantastic selection of local ales (including their own namesake ‘The Old Black Lion’).The Hotel is located in the heart of the Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye just a short drive from the A438, it also offers free on-site parking for guests. The city of Hereford is roughly 35 minutes away and offers excellent transport links to the rest of the country. For those flying in, Cardiff International Airport is about a 95 minute journey from the Hotel. The Old Black Lion is situated just a three minute walk from the centre of Hay-on-Wye. Renowned internationally as a Mecca for bibliophiles the town offers over 30 bookshops, many selling specialist and second-hand books. It is also home to the annual Hay Festival, Europe’s premier literature and arts festival. The town lies on the east bank of the River Wye and is within the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of the Black Mountains. Offering some of the most breathtaking scenery in Wales, the surrounding area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with both the Offas Dyke Path and Wye Valley Walk passing through the town. ... more   less
