After reading the reviews on here and other places such as Facebook and google me and my husband were really quite worried what we were going to end up getting, we booked via groupon and phoned up to book in with the hotel first time the phone was put down on us but eventually got through and sorted it. I discussed on the phone it was our first wedding anniversary so we had seen online that you can have a room with a view and a big bath so we thought perfect nice and romantic.
When we arrived to check in the guy on the desk barely spoke just asked for our name and our paper then gave us the room card and got me to sign a piece of paper and that was it so I asked where abouts our room was as we hadn’t been here before in which he just pointed (the hotel is like a maze) so I left that then I enquired about booking a table for dinner that night he said he sorted it so me and my husband then went to find our room, there are lifts however there are stairs too which you do have to use even if you use the lift first as some places you can’t get too without having to use stairs (fine for us as we are able to use stairs but later on that day I...After reading the reviews on here and other places such as Facebook and google me and my husband were really quite worried what we were going to end up getting, we booked via groupon and phoned up to book in with the hotel first time the phone was put down on us but eventually got through and sorted it. When we arrived to check in the guy on the desk barely spoke just asked for our name and our paper then gave us the room card and got me to sign a piece of paper and that was it so I asked where abouts our room was as we hadn’t been here before in which he just pointed (the hotel is like a maze) so I left that then I enquired about booking a table for dinner that night he said he sorted it so me and my husband then went to find our room, there are lifts however there are stairs too which you do have to use even if you use the lift first as some places you can’t get too without having to use stairs (fine for us as we are able to use stairs but later on that day I saw an elderly couple using walking aids struggling with a suitcase so I went and carried it up the stairs for them so they could get to their room.
Our room we walked in looked ok nice flat screen on the wall, bed looked comfy was rock hard to sit on but it was ok we then opened the curtains to see no nice view but a roof so then I checked the bathroom and there is no bath just a standard shower. I went back down to reception to have the same guy there, I told him online said about the big baths in the room and I had arranged on the phone for a room with a view he then starts looking on the computer and said there’s only 1 other room available but it’s not been refurbished so I said is it worse then the first one which he responded 100% yes so I was like oh he gave me the key card and told me to go have a look again just pointing into a direction to where it was so me and my husband went to check this other room out. Struggled to find it as the signs were a bit confusing as to what floor this particular room was on, eventually got there to find a more run down room the marks on the walls were more obvious and the peeling of the paint etc were worse then the first room which for being newly refurbished is quite surprising considering the marks etc. Anyhow open the curtains and it’s ground floor but u can see the river so we thought ok little better then the first one the tv wasn’t on the wall just on the side and then we check the bathroom and there is no bath in this one :/
So we thought sod it its got a slightly better view we will have this one so I go back to reception to find a different person on there and I didn’t get his name but he was brilliant I explained what we were doing and he sorted us a room with a lovely view high up and a room with a bath in it the only thing was he did say most rooms don’t have baths so I showed him their website for that area states it does which he was surprised at. Anyhow I got my view and my bath brilliant we took that room once moving our things up there we checked the room out view was beautiful outside on the balcony there were tons of fag ends but nothing awful. Tv was on the side quite hard to watch via the bed unless u sit on the end or lie at the bottom which we did but it was ok. The bath was all stained and marked and cracked so we showered in the pool area showers instead as it didn’t look safe at all to use in our room but we thought sod it the view is lovely.
We searched in our room for room service menu’s and for opening times for the restaurant , club room, health and fitness, and swimming pool area we couldn’t find anything so tried phoning reception no one picked up so we decided to go have a quick look around before our booked dinner time came about.
We found the pool and found out on a Friday it’s open till 9.40 which we thought was great :]
The pool / sauna / steam room
Brilliant! The changing rooms are clean the guy who seemed to be on the desk Friday Saturday and Sunday was really helpful and friendly :] we loved it in there and spent quite a lot of time there. The first night we found someone had put menthol stuff in the steam room (random guy swimming) as he told us so we didn’t enjoy that but the next day it was fine back to normal.
Restaurant was quieter then I expected but the food was delicious! Guy at reception hadn’t booked us in but they said it was fine.
The first night me and my husband had the soup and bread roll (no butter came with it)
It was a decent portion and tasted lovely!
I had a burger and chips my husband had the seafood pasta we both thoroughly enjoyed our mains.
Then as we had our dinner that night on groupon you had to pay £6 for any pudding on the list in which was the disappointing part I had the brownie and cream which was dry and so small. My husband had the cheesecake which did taste great but neither were £6 worth at all.
Staff in the restaurant look like they are being forced to work except 1 lady an older lady who wore white & black the others were just in black other then her she was friendly and happy the rest just looked miserable and we found that on all 3 days.
Breakfast (groupon again)
It’s a buffet type it was nice not tons of choice but enough :]
Same with drinks good enough amount.
Staff in bar are the same as in restaurant miserable looking like they are being made to work. I asked about ordering food for room service he sighed and was unhelpful (never got it in the end) we went out and got some bits instead.
Ordered hot chocolate at bar later on cost £3 something came in a really small cup half full I asked where the rest was he just looked and said that’s what it is. :/
The bar doesn’t have tons and tons of seats so the two times we attempted to go in we couldn’t sit down so ended up going back to our room.
The bed is really hard to sit on but once your in it it’s actually fine :]
We went out for lunch the next day as obviously being a hotel quite pricey.
Evening meal was again beautiful!
I had the chicken pakora my husband had the soup.
Mains I had the chicken tikka curry and my husband had lamb vegetables and potato’s. We were both really happy again portions good sizes food tasted beautiful.
The happy older waitress asked about puddings and we said no but she gave us a menu incase we changed our minds which we did as my husband really wanted the pecan pie which he loved again not worth the £6 I had the profiteroles which were basically pastry no cream disappointing. But overall great meal.
We then found on the top of our wardrobe a price list for breakfast stating £20 so the last day we didn’t get it as that’s a ridiculous amount of money.
Tv has 5 channels 1 radio station & 1 children’s programme.
Returning to our room our key wouldn’t work so we found a phone on a wall phoned reception and they bought us up another one.
Restaurant appeared busier and a lady played the piano which was lovely :) was difficult to have a conversation at times due to the loudness but we thought it was a nice touch :)
We ordered starters which we both really enjoyed I had the soup my husband had the pâté.
We ordered a bread basket which was shocking 2 bread rolls were all we got hardly a basket but oh well.
For our mains you go up and a guy cuts your chosen meat my husband had the gammon which he said was fantastic.
I had the beef but asked to change as it was rare blood oozing through it which I don’t like at all yet he said no I couldn’t change it as he had cut it so then you help yourself to vegetables.
Stuffing balls are dry and powdery.
I gave my husband my meat (I don’t like gammon)
I then left my food as the blood (there was that much) had run all over my plate over my vegetables I did tell a waitress in which she responded oh dear.
We didn’t bother with pudding.
We then checked out with no troubles.
We would return but would look elsewhere first.
Shame they haven’t kept up on it as it could be a beautiful hotel in and out.
