“Charming Little House”
Reviewed 22 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Myself, my partner, and our five year old son spent a week in the Wendy House at the start of May. I've got family in Eastbourne and have visited many times, so I mostly chose the property based on the excellent location and good value. I chose well!

The house is beautiful. It's extremely well kept, spotlessly clean, and beautifully decorated with a cute seaside theme. It's a light, bright, airy property, with lots of windows and skylights. It's a renovated stable, according to the lovely housekeeper Jan, and so the front door is a charming two-part door. It is a small house, but the three of us were very comfortable. It's a cozy little place for sure.

We didn't rent a car so I can't really comment on the size of the garage, but it made for very useful storage space for us, (a buggy would easily fit inside, probably easier than folding it under the stairs each time) and had a few fold up chairs and a small table for my son to take into the courtyard, which he loved. The famous Kitty, the friendly cat mentioned repeatedly in previous reviews, was a big hit, and liked to hang around the courtyard with us. Also in the garage was a sweeping brush, a freezer, and a small clothes airer, all of which were very useful.

The kitchen was probably my favourite room in the whole property. I love to cook, and we've had to deal with many self-catering kitchens with nothing but butter knives and rusty frying pans, but this was a proper kitchen! Firstly, it was simply but beautifully decorated - the twinkly black floor made me very happy! There's a built-in mood light, which is a bit strange but it looked good, as well as a regular white bulb. The whole set-up, again while small, was really quite stylish while also being very practical. There was quite a bit of storage space in the way of a few presses, and the fridge was small but spotless and functional. There's a lovely electric oven and stove, a washing machine, and a microwave, but no dishwasher, and not a huge amount of surface space to work with while cooking. There was at least three very sharp chef's knives, as well as four like-new cooking pots, two pans, a cheese grater, a huge chopping board, loads of wooden spoons, an assortment of glasses, delph and cutlery, all of which was in top notch condition. There was even a few plastic cups and plates for kids, so we really did have everything we needed. There was salt and flour in the cupboard, as well as a bottle of washing-up liquid, a sponge, and a dishcloth, plus a few other handy bits and bobs. Having these few things - as well as the welcome pack of tea, coffee, and milk in the fridge - made such a big difference to making the place feel like a home.

The main room was quite comfortable, with a neat dining area, a comfortable couch, and a cozy lounge chair. There's an entire shelf of novels, with some kid's and grown up's DVDs and a board game or two, as well as absolutely loads of information leaflets about the area. It got a little chilly downstairs in the night, and unfortunately we couldn't get the heating working, but otherwise it was perfect. The TV was fully functional with enough chanels to keep the little one happy, and the DVD player was a great addition. The wifi was strong and worked perfectly all week long.

While I'm on the subject, the wifi and electricity were both included in the price of the rental, making it even better value. There was no electricity meter, it was all paid in advance - one less thing to worry about!

Also, there's a stairsway, and a step up into the property itself, so it's definitely not wheelchair accessable. However, the stairs are not steep, so they're easy to navigate if your mobility is only slightly reduced. Ther's two full-sized wheelie bins outside, one green and one regular, which are emptied on Thursdays if I remember correctly.

The bathroom was again, very nicely decorated - I particularly liked the blue tiling around the mirror - and extremely clean, with everything working well. There was absolutely loads of towels, very handy! There was a mirrored cabinet for safely storing medications, lots of places to hang towels to dry, and a nice bath mat to help keep the floor dry. The bath was a very comfortable size, but did take a while to fill up. The shower was a bit old and fussy - as is typical of double boilers, the water is usually either cold or boiling, with very little in between. (Try it on setting 2.5!) This is also true of the taps, so be careful with the hot water. There was a small bar new of soap and some little shower gels and creams waiting for us on a little shelf in the bathroom, a very nice touch.

The bedrooms were lovely, again simply but well decorated with very clean, comfortable linens. The beds and pillows were good quality and very comfortable, but the blankets were far too heavy for the time of year. The bedrooms and upstairs did get very stuffy during the night, while downstairs was a bit too cold - my only real complaint about the place, and is more of a renovation issue than anything else. A few extra blankets of the lighter varity would've been a perfect addition, letting us decide what we needed ourselves.

The twin room was a bit more spacious than the double. There's two good-sized wardrobes upstairs with absolutely loads of hangers, as well as a large chest of drawers and a nice big mirror in the double room. There's also a fantastic Babyliss hairdryer not unlike my own one, and in really good condtion, I was delighted when I saw it! There's a hoover as well, and a few extra storage spaces upstairs. There's a very pretty arched window in the double room, adding again to the charm.

It's a quiet spot. Anyone who's been to Eastbourne before will know well that the seagulls are the brassiest birds in the world, and can get really loud sometimes, but they didn't wake us. There's a small slip road beside the property, but not a lot of people use it, so it was very peaceful.

It was my son's first holiday and he announced on the second morning that he loved the Wendy House. It really is a cozy little base packed with charm in a lovely little town. Be sure to check out the Eastbourne market on the main street on Wednesdays and Sundays, the Arendale Centre for loads and loads of shopping, and the abundance of nearby eateries, including several beautiful vegetarian restaraunts. There's several conviencence stores and chemists nearby, loads of lovely shops on Grove Road, as well as a taxi rank and a post box. Not to mention, the train station really is a couple of minutes walk, and with the seafront so nearby, there's loads to see and do within walking distance - hence why we didn't rent a car.

I must mention what a gentleman Tim is. We spoke on the phone and several times via instant message, he was incredibly obliging and sympathetic to anything we needed and any questions I had. Jan, too, was so obliging and friendly, and doted on my son. They were both lovely people to be around. Our deposit was returned very quickly as well.

Overall, the Wendy House is a pretty little property, a cute and cozy home away from home. Maintained with obvious love and care, extremely well stocked, and with lots of lovely little extra touches, it has everything you need for a perfect seaside break.

Management Response
27 May 2016
Thank you so much for your time completing this review Chris. No stone has been left unturned and your words will be a massive help to potential guests. Just a quick comment about the heating. The programmer had been adjusted by a previous guest and therefore not responding to your request for heat. It has now been changed to a more user friendly type so hopefully no more chilly nights. As you mentioned we really do care about Wendy House. It is so pleasing to hear that are time and effort is ensuring our guests expectations are being soundly matched or exceeded time after time. We are very I do hope we can welcome you and your family again in the future. Kind regards. Tim

“Convenient, centrally located accomodation”
Reviewed 18 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

The property has been described by other reviewers accurately.

As mentioned it is located very close to transport hubs and the major shopping centre however it is surprisingly quiet.

The booking process was very easy and Tim responded very quickly - and was always on the end of the phone if you had any queries. A bonus is the acceptance of out of main season short term lets. He also returned the deposit the day I left!

One slight downside for some might be the distance to the beach - it's 3/4 of a mile away - but only about 15 minutes walk.

All linens were provided - and there was also a small welcome pack of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and milk. There's wifi and freesat for those wishing to chill.

Mention has been made of the garage - whilst I did indeed fit my Prius into the garage without problems (with mirrors folded back) you might struggle if your car is more than an inch wider. Length is not so much of a problem.

I will return the next time I'm in the area.
