Owner description: Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant.

Good restaurant, seafood, soups with shells and salmon, fresh daily food, historic island, earlier monastery, fortress, the Germans had it under the last war, now its a nice place for couples and families, for sunbathing or other...

Take the short ferry ride of about ten minutes from Ravnkloa to Munkholmen island, to enjoy the sun and the beaches out there. Make sure you pack your swimsuit and a relaxing book.

The island has an interesting history as well, so if offered, pay an extra 50 NOK for the guided tour of the main tower. You won't regret it.

There is a small souvenir shop with local made memorabilia, jewelry and other fun stuff from local artists out there, as well as a small cafe selling some snacks and beverages.

The roundtrip with the ferry costs about 80-90 NOK for adults, about half of that for children over a certain age.

This year it's been ten years since I lived in Trondheim, and even though I spent four years there I never went out to Munkholmen, not sure why. This summer I went back to my old home town and made sure I set aside a few hours to see the little island up close, and I'm SO glad I did!! I brought my swim suit and a book, took the ferry out (80 NOK round trip), and enjoyed the sun and the fjord. I also joined in on a guided tour of the tower (50 NOK), and it was totally worth the time spent. It took about 30 minutes, and you'll here about the history of the island and the buildings there. Very interesting! I'm definitely coming back whenever I'm in town.

Take the boat from Ravnkloa at the end of Munkegata. A nice trip through the chanels, in just a nautic mile from the port will bring you to the famous Munholmen. The place has nice views to the city and theTrondheim fiord. At the good guieded tour into the main tower you will heare about the rich history of the island and of Norway. Take the very short trip around the walls and take a bite at the very good restaurant. The day was rainy and we ate a tasty fish soupe and fantastic sea food salad. You can t have a complete idea of Trondheim without visiting Munkholmen.

Worth the boat trip (and money) out to Munkholmen and the medieval citadell with the guidede tour. When we were there they also had a craft shop as well, very nice things to buy. But the café was a big dissapointment.
