Owner description: Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant.

Worth the boat trip (and money) out to Munkholmen and the medieval citadell with the guidede tour. When we were there they also had a craft shop as well, very nice things to buy. But the café was a big dissapointment.

old Prison, monastery, and during World War II took over the island for their air defense, lots of history, take the tour once on the island! You can picnic, the locals go there to sun bathe and swim and picnic. A short ferry ride over and back.

Old monastery, Second World War air defense place, old castle area. Nice little island for a picnic in sea scenery. I took a sightseeing tour from the docks with 200kr which ended up to the island. It was windy and rainy day so 15minutes around island was enough. Return with route boat is included so you can stay as long as you will. Boats back to the island go every hour until 18 o'clock in high season. On a sunny day would definitely been longer there.

Nice place. Especially in nice weather, it is great at Munkholmen. A short boat trip from the center of Trondheim. Bring a packed lunch and enjoy the day. Nice with a bath in Trondheimsfjorden. The building is worth a tour where one can hear about the story and what this was used for.

We took the 5.00pm boat and asked specifically if we could see everything on the island without having to pay extra as we have learnt this is a common theme in Norway. We were assured we could walk round everything. However ....once there you can only go inside the main building with a guide which cost 50Kr each making the whole trip 120Kr each for not a lot. The island is small with only a cafe to visit without the guide. There is no tourist information explaining the history.....and also the cafe shut at 5.45pm leaving us to stand in the cold and the wind waiting for the return boat at 6.10pm.

Money for nothing!!
