Hotell Refsnes Gods is built from an old manor-like building, situated close to the ocean outiside Moss. Situated on what was previously an open meadow that strectched the 100 meters down to the sea, the hotel is now surrounded by private villas and condominiums. The one really unique aspect of the hotel, apart from it's many corridors and levels made up by a combination of buildings that have been added to the main house, is its art collection that permeates the hotel and the different rooms. These are all named after both well know, and not so well known painters and sculptors. We stayed in one of the "newer" buildings, although this didn't translate into new rooms. Ours was probably 15+ years since seeing its latest renovation, the sink was plugged, the toilet was rickety, and the shower door didn't really fit and was very difficult to close. Luckilly the beds were quite good, and the size of the room was decent.
We quickly discovered that the hotel was run and operated by staff from all over the world, and mostly by quite young, inexperienced people. And from the lunch and onward we saw ample examples, of normal hotel processes and procedures not really being under control. We had ordered and double checked that some of the rooms needed to be allergy friendly. One of these turned out to be a dog-friendly room instead. We ordered wine with our lunch, and after having been brought the wrong bottle, we got a warm bottle which had been sitting on a shelf (they didn't have any chilled ones). The celebration dinner was a bit of a fiasko - half of the main course had to be sent back because it wasn't warm enough, and when it came back, half of the portions were gone. Half of my plate of lamb-chops came without meat on them (!), only with the bones. And so on. The next morning upon checking out, I found a glass of non-alcoholic juice from the bar was charged at 150 kroner, to which the receptionist conceded "that was expensive" and offered no further action (naturally I demanded that they take 2/3 of the price off which they did).
So - this could have been so much more, but Hotel Refsnes Gods is an establishment where smiles and apparent effort (of which there was plenty) simply don't translate into anything resembling a properly run hotel. It is a case where there is still plenty of potential to improve, and where the owners of the hotel should spend more time ensuring quality in their service.

Dear Hans L. Thank you for your very comprehensive review. All your comments have been fully gone through within all the department. Your stay seems to be one of the exceptions when thing starts out wrong and end up the same way, we are very sorry for that. We are among the few hotels with only Norwegian-speaking staff in reception and the restaurant, and most of our staff do have many years of experience, specially all the department leaders, so this must really have been a very abnormal Saturday, which we really regret. We do appreciate that you are impressed buy our extensive art collection and staff with smiles and apparent effort, that is a good starting point. As the owner I can assure you that we daily spend time on ensuring quality in our service and product, actually this is our main focus. Hopefully you will come back to us since you describe us as an interesting hotel, and then I am quite sure you will have a nice stay with us. Best regards Gunn Salbuvik

When I visited the hotel, there was a busy building site next door. There was also some restoration going on at the hotel itself. This became apparent in the bar, where one could look out the window and gaze upon the things being used for the restoration.

When this hotel advertise itself as a "mansion", or "grand estate", one would think that measures would be taken to disguise unpleasant views.

But let's move one, shall we?

If none of the above was a reality (back then), the hotel itself lacks excitement. The public rooms shows heavily wear and tear.

The room I got was OK-ish. Small, with a comfortable bed. A huge spider web in one of the corners... Some of the tiles on the bathroom had some nasty staines on them.

The formal dinner rooms are nice! Dinner was very tasty. Very good wine was served.
Breakfast was disappointing. Luch, better.

The hotel's garden towards the sea, is beautiful and well maintained.

Has to be said, though, that the staff is very nice! Kind, polite and service minded.

All this being said, I find the "mansion" to be overrated. Of course it is a matter of taste and opinion.

Would I recommend Refsnes Gods? No.
Would I stay there again? No.

Dear Mr.Gentleman Travel. Thank you for your very nice feedback about the food, the wine and the garden. As the general manager I am always very pleased when the staff is described as kind, polite and service minded. We want to give our customers new bathrooms, that means some things used for the restoration could be seen if you look "the wrong way" when you are in the bar. Luckily most of our guests sits out in the garden or in the public area next to the reception. All our furniture and curtains in this were brand new in April.

A very beautiful hotel, with great views and a romantic setting. We started our stay by taking a swim in the fjord and looking at all the sculptures down by the beach. If you're a fan of Munch they have plenty of his (and other) art hanging around in the hotel. We very much enjoyed our stay. However, the dinner (though good) did not live up our expectations, and therefore we thought it was a bit overpriced.

Kjære Helena Cecilia K. Takk for din meget hyggelige tilbakemelding. Vennlig hilsen Gunn Salbuvik

We stayed three nights and our expectations had been 100% fulfilled. We booked a room at the top floor with a balcony and view on the fjord. The room was large enough for an extra bed for our son.

The breakfast is excellent and exceeds what you usually get in Norway by far. Fresh fruits, smoothies, eggs ...

The garden is huge and we played soccer and frisbee.

The hotel is a great point to visit the area. We took two daytrips, one to Frederikstad and one to Hvaler Islands. We can recommend both.
