Best Western Karl Johan Hotell
Ranked #42 of 102 Hotels in Oslo
Reviewed 2 March 2012

Me and my colleagues were on a business trip. On arrival the reception staff were very welcoming and friendly. The single room were on a small side and you would not want to relax in there after a hard day at work. Some of the rooms had broken showers! That said the rooms were tidy and clean. Breakfast selection was fine with all the basics provided in a buffet style. The location was super and a very short walk from National Theatret station (straight connection to Oslo Lufhavn airport). The hotel is in the centre and again a short walk to the Marina and there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby,

I stayed one night at the hotel before attending a course at Gardermoen. I was going to meet a friend for dinner and chose this hotel because of its central location in Oslo. It´s very close to the station "Nationaltheateret" where the airport express stops. I got a surprisingly large room on the 1st floor, with the large window facing the main street, Karl Johan. Despite this fact, the traffic noise during evening and night was at an acceptable level. By all means, traffic could be heard quite well, but it was less disturbing than expected.

My only reason for giving the hotel rating 4 and not 5 is the breakfast (4,5 would be a more appropriate rating...) . The breakfast buffet was OK, but I've had better and more varied breakfasts at other hotels, though.

Staff was friendly.

Room Tip: May be a good idea to ask for a room facing away from Karl Johan if you're afraid of traffic noi...

Stayed here during a sales conference. The hotel is located on Oslo's main street close to the Royal Palace. The rooms are large, roomy and comfortable. Free wi-fi throughout the hotel is an added bonus. The metro and train station are closeby and thus make traveling a breeze. The staff is friendly and warm. The breakfast in the morning was excellent. Overall a good option while your staying in Oslo.

During our trip throughout Norway, Oslo was our first stop. We stayed in the Karl Johann Hotel and every single minute of our stay was perfect. When we arrived at the front-desk a very helpful lady told us everything we should know about the hotel and the city of Oslo. The hotel itself is very stylish in a classic way. Our room, 2nd floor and with a view over the central 'park' of Oslo, was stunning. Large, very clean with a great bed. When you walk out of the hotel, you can go practically anywhere, as it is situated in the heart of Oslo, which is one of the most relaxing and beautiful cities in the world.

Other reviews complaining about the noise: we were at the frontside of the hotel but didn't have any nuisance. Only disadvantage I can think of is the fact that the parking possibilities in the Oslo city centre are very limited and very expansive, hotel doesn't have a parking garage of its own.

Met expectations, would recommend, but might stay at the other Best Western property next time...

Location: On Karl Johans Gate, across from parliament.

Staff: Outstanding; helpful, sincere, knowledgeable, warm, efficient.

Room: Booked a suite under the OsloPass scheme, and for once in my life the picture matched the room. It. Was. Huge. Even by US standards. Room decor was dated but clean.

Public areas: Worn, but cleaned regularly (noted daily vacuuming, dusting, etc.)

Breakfast: Typical buffet, usual cold variety with two rotating hot choices.

About the location: You are right in the middle of the 'action', and on three out of four nights, at about 2am, we would hear heavy work on the street outside or neighboring buildings. My personal favorite was re-sanding the gaps between the cobblestones. Seriously. Ever wondered how they do that? Here's how- they spread sand on the stones, then vibrate it into place with a pneumatic rotating flapper. We could feel the vibrations. All this I learned at 2 am. Then I popped another ambien...

If/when I return to Oslo, this hotel will still be in my top 5 choices, but I might opt for one off of Karl Johans Gate.
