“Good, cosy, convenient hotel near Stephenplatz”
Reviewed 19 June 2011

We chose Hotel Mailberger Hof as it was in the very heart of the old town in Vienna. Our plans kept on changing for Vienna but we were sure that we wanted to spend near Stephenplatz, for whatever time that we get.

This family run hotel is well located in the pedestrian zone of Vienna and only 5 mins walking distance from the Opera-House and the St Stephen’s cathedral. The hotel’s history dates back to the 14th century. Originally the house was composed of two gothic, gable houses which in the 17th century were converted to a small boroque palace complete with horse stables, coach-house and it’s own chapel. It used to be owned by the Knights during this period and later on in 1976, this was converted into a first class hotel. The entire building is now classified as a historical monument and is under preservation order. To our liking, we found the furnitures and decor very artistic in nature. It gave us a feeling that we are really staying in Vienna as the decor was made typically in Viennese style. The breakfast was sumptuous and service up to the mark. We do not mind staying in the same hotel if we ever go back to Vienna.

I booked two nights through internet (oct. 29 - Nov. 1st 2010), as a birthday present for my mother. Great photographs on the hotel site. I was most disappointed. Rooms are very shabby. The entire hotel looks poor. A four star hotel where noone takes you to your room or carries an old ladies luggage. One star away from the Intercontinental Wien, where I stayed before, but a world of difference. I can't understand how this hotel got its four stars. I feel utterly cheated...

Centrally located but overpriced.
Hotel is worn and my room really needed to be redecorated. Worn carpets and furniture. Bedlinen in poor condition, but really nice beds.
Old and dark bathroom.
Our room was towards the pedestrian street and was extremely noisy at night and in the morning. Earplugs are a must!
Breakfast was OK but nothing special.

When looking for accomodation in Vienna, Mailberger Hof was recommend to us by a view sites, but it turned out to be the hotel my wife and I were most disappointed about in our entire holiday. Allthough we were greeted friendly by the staff, they immediately charged 35 euro for valet parking. That leaves a sour taste. Hotel did look very classic and traditional but not in the charming way. When entering our room, we could not help but feel slightly disappointed after all the good hotels we’ve stayed in so far. This room cried out for a major renovation. And even though the location was very good and the breakfast was excellent, the hotel could not offer me the value I would expect, it was disappointing. And before I forget, if I stay in Mailberger Hof it is quite sloppy to find soap and shampoo from another hotel in the bathroom, that would be my first big change as a hotel manager. So for a good location this is a good place, for all other things, please search on.

This hotel is located in the heart of Vienna. The service was excellent, and the room charming. The beds were sooo comfortable, we barely made it out of bed for breakfast. There was a TV, mini-bar, desk and arm chairs. The room was spacious. Breakfast is served in a veranda by the inner courtyard (an excellent buffet). We arrived five minutes before it ended, and were received with a smile. We were told not to miss the delicious breakfast, and to take our time. !! :-)
We had a fantastic price through the Office of Tourism.
