€60 million for salt & pepper shakers? They have a set here said to be worth that much. The architecture alone is worth a visit. Paintings nicely presented with descriptions on a ledge below so as not to interfere with the works of art. We had a private viewing before opening but layout would accommodate crowds well. Plenty of seating throughput to appreciate the masters.

As with other good museums in Europe, this museum is stuffed with great works of art and warrants the better part of a day to visit thoroughly. The collections are diverse and the major art periods are well represented, especially the Flemish paintings by Brueghel are outstanding. The Egyptian section was an added attraction but the kunstkammer (cabinet of curiosities) in the ground floor will take your breath away. As the name suggests, these rooms contain an astounding range of knick-knacks. The effect is like opening multiple treasure chests and walking into them. Additionally, if you're a fan of Klimt, they currently have an elevated staircase that lets you get up, close and personal to his paintings on the arch. Definitely recommended.

Tip - If you intend to visit the imperial treasury as well, get a combined ticket and save 7 euros. You need not bother with queuing up for the ticket office in this museum later.

It's a wonderful museum that is thoroughly exhausting, in a good way of course. We really enjoyed the ancient history collection.

It wasn't too crowded, even at peak time. Admission tickets standard with museums around the world. And yes, the Austrians can collect an artifact as well!

There is so much variety to see here and lots of great masters. Currently they are showing off the Klimt arch paintings on a special platform so you can get close. Make sure you don’t skip the smaller side rooms as great pieces are here; pick up a leaflet that highlights where the great works are.
