The Kitzbühler Alpen Ski region is a top class Ski resort area which has earned best European ski resort awards year after year for good reason. They invest very heavily in their infrastructure, with the newest lifts with seat heating, snow cannons (not that they were necessary this year!).
I’m not sure whether another resort exists with as many hundreds of Kilometers of groomed slopes and modern lifts. You can ski for days without covering the same slopes twice.
All of it is interconnected with an extensive bus network, and all the personnel are super friendly and helpful.
We arrived at the end of the unprecedented 'snow event' - it had snowed every day for around 3 weeks. The start of the week was still snowing, and as expected the lifts were late opening and there were limited runs when they did open.
The signage was ok- but seemed a bit lacking on piste compared to other areas - but they might have been hidden under the snow!
Skied ontowards Soll on one day, which involved a shoirt but efficient bus-link - that is recommended.
Some of the older lifts are noticeably in need of upgrades - perhaps not becoming of the 'world class' status
Loved this resort and will be back! Huge choice of runs/restaurants and nice people. Enjoyed meeting skiers from all over the world and the bill didn’t brake the bank like in the US!
For all the hype that Kitzbuehel is the world’s best, we were sorely disappointed. There are several issues which became apparent when Mother Nature decided to throw an enormous amount of snow at the area. Naturally we understood that areas would be closed and lifts would not be open. However what was open was poorly maintained and signed, mainly because the signs were covered in snow. With visibility down to a few meters, would it have been such a big effort to get a few people out wiping down signs every few hours? Apparently it was as we and everyone else started to get lost on the mountain. What was open was rubbish. It was groomed apparently once a day and then we were left to our own devices ploughing around in knee deep snow. Most of the available pistes were just mountain tracks so if you got stuck behind a school you could go off for lunch to wait it out. Even red or black runs would start with these long slow below blue mountain tracks that were heavily congested. When the employees drove around on their snowmobiles they often failed to make the warning noise and so came out of nowhere in the fog. Our last day was a sunny one and though a lot of the pistes were still closed I did glimpse the potential better runs. However the lifts were very crowded then. Information was scarce and poor and the big boards confusing especially since there were no ‘you are here’ signs. Other places have the actual lifts and open pistes lit up in green. Here it was like a matching game for children. To add insult to injury as the week approached the big race Hahnenkamm, there were a multitude of people out cordoning off the best slopes and building viewing platforms etc in the shocking weather, so why forget about the paying public who were funding the whole enterprise? To add insult to injury the bus system to ferry you around from one slope to another, essential in this weather, is crap. Seriously infrequent. And forget about a nightlife. It stops around 7. So then you pay through the nose for taxis. Worst transport infrastructure I have seen in a ski area after over 40 years. Unbelievable.
I understand that the skiing was hindered by factors outside of their control but not one iota of effort was made to make the holiday more pleasurable by Kitzski. And a week there does not come cheap.
Hello ThreeDugongs,
thank you for your feedback. We are deeply sorry, that you did not enjoy your skiing holidays as much as you expected. But please be sure that we do everything possible these days to provide skiing possibilities. Mother nature indeed bring as an incredible amount of snow within a very short pediod of time and our staff works days and nights to kepp up skiing service, at least on those tracks and lifts, where it is somehow possible. We had to close lifts und slopes due to severe danger of avalnches, breaking trees and other treaths and we do not risk anything when it comes to the security of our guests. SInce we use the same infotainment system as most other skiing resorts, we do show open and closed lifts and trcks with red (closed) and open (green) lights.
The skibus system is one of the largest in whole Austria, can you please tell us the route which you were going and not happy with so that we can improve it?
Once again we want to apologize that you did not have your well deserved perfect skiing experience due to the very unusual and challenging conditions. However we hope that you will give KitzSki a second chance to prove that we definitely are a really good skiing resort and work very hard to satisfy the needs and wishes of every single guest.
All the best, yours KitzSki Team

Hello Niall D,

All the best, yours KitzSki Team
My husband and I enjoyed skiing here as a part of a trip. Skiing in the morning, as early as you can get there, is the best. This is like most ski areas that are busy, the best skiing is before the snow is churned up. The gondola ride was particularly enjoyable as the scenery is gorgeous. There are also areas with refreshments that have amazing views.
Although there seemed to be a lot of skiers, the only places that it seemed congested were areas that were directly above lifts. We saw that the resort was grooming during the day trying to preserve the snow. If there were any improvements to be made, I would say that more grooming is needed during the daytime with Spring-like temperatures. There were areas that were quite treacherous because of the depth of the chop and crud, and that was with my wide all-mountain skis that I favor in the North American Rockies. This type of issue can be found at most ski resorts when you combine warming temperatures with a large number of skiers. It would just make it more enjoyable. I did see people wipe out and that's never fun.
