Always wanted to stay here ever since I’ve been coming to Malta but put off until the refurbishment - both of the hotel and Triton Square. Staff are great - felt like they genuinely wanted you to have a nice time/be served/have a great Malta experience. Room was a good size and the balcony view across the harbour was a fantastic way to start/end the day. Decor throughout the hotel was fine if a wee bit bland. Can’t quite put my finger on it but there was something (small) missing about the ambience and experience. I might have been expecting something a bit more grandiose so this might be my fault.

Breakfast was ‘uneven’ - bit harsh of previous reviewers to criticise so strongly (it’s bloody busy!) but beverage service can be tardy and 50/50 correct.

Now Triton Square is ‘fixed’, this is the best location to stay - Valletta has so much more to explore and indulge than it did 20 years ago, and if you’re looking for wider travels, the bus station is the other side of the square.

Will certainly be back next year.

Overall, the Phoenicia is pleasant but feels like a work in progress which doesn’t justify its price tag.

The hotel is in a great location, with a well designed and maintained interior.

It is let down by two major and one minor factors.

First, service is very patchy. The concierges, reception and staff in the club bar are very helpful. However, the waiting staff are inattentive, particularly at breakfast and in the lounge area, and unwilling to accommodate guests’ requests.

Second, food is very mediocre for the cost and by comparison with other local restaurants. The breakfast buffet is solid, but not worth €22.50.

Third, minor point, the rooms feel quite cramped. They are fine for a couple of nights, but would be frustrating over a longer stay. The building work taking place is visible and audible from the harbour view bedrooms.

Dear Jnqwerty,

Thanks so much for writing this review and I would like to apologise for not fully meeting your expectations during you recent stay with us.

I am very sorry to hear that you received unsatisfactory service at breakfast and in our lounge and will discuss your comments internally. As you can see from the countless online reviews we received over the years, The Phoenicia has always maintained an outstanding reputation for its service standards, which will always remain of paramount importance to us.

The Phoenicia was built in Art Deco style more than 80 years ago and is the island’s most historic hotel. While this provides the hotel with its unique old world charm, it unfortunately also comes with certain challenges not present in new buildings, such as limited room sizes.

Kindly be informed that there are currently no building works taking place at The Phoenicia. The construction of the Heath Club & Spa annex building is also complete and only the internal fitting-out is ongoing. I am assuming what you perceived as building works might have been minor maintenance somewhere on hotel premises and I am very sorry if you were disturbed by these.

Thanks again for your valuable feedback and I sincerely hope you will give us another chance to prove to you that we take guest satisfaction very seriously and would never compromise.

Kind regards,

Nikola Greifeld, Guest Relations Manager

The décor here is simply stunning. Everywhere you look the details have been carefully and artfully gathered to create warmth, sophistication and comfort. The lobby is one of the most beautiful in the world, not dark or atmospheric but light and filled with color and comfort.

On Tuesday, 13th November we had coffees in the refurbished Palm Court and happy to see that it still looks grand. Then we took a walk to the pool area to see the changes. At about 2.30 in the afternoon hotel staff were using an electric steam cleaner to erase green moss from steps down to the pool area. What struck me was that the pool area at this time was busy with relaxing guests. Also, the music that was being played by the pool bar staff was ridiculously loud and the type of music was also inappropriate. The volume had already been playing and not just to mask the noise of the steam cleaner! It was incredulous to me that a five star establishment would have considered this acceptable and has made me rethink about ever staying at this hotel which we seriously did consider.

Dear shuggreen,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience in our Palm Court Lounge and I am delighted to hear that you approve of the recent refurbishment.

Please be informed that the steps had to be steam cleaned for health & safety reasons and our guests were all advised beforehand of this being carried out that particular afternoon.

We discussed your comments with regards to the loud music on the pool deck internally and I am sorry you had to witness this.

However, this must have been an isolated incident lasting only for a few minutes, as two members of our senior management were present on the pool deck at the time of the steam cleaning and both confirmed that the volume of the music was adequate and all our guests enjoyed a relaxing afternoon.

Thanks again for your valuable feedback and we do hope to be able to welcome you as a hotel guest one day, in order to prove to you that we take guest satisfaction very seriously and would never compromise.

Kindest regards,

Nikola Greifeld, Guest Relations Manager

The Phoenicia was in a superb location to walk into the town. The rooms light and comfortable. The Palm Court lounge was delighful but most of all the staff were a credit the hotel. Every single person we met and interacted with could not have been more helpful and personable.
