Originating from the fishing port of Brixham i was expecting to see a working fishing village in tune with the sea with picturesque views & a market selling authentic maltese gifts for friends & family back home.
Never have i been so disappointed or let down by a place than Marsaxlokk once we'd fought our way through numerous roadworks, poor signage eventually arriving in the carpark by the harbour. It was the first festival of the year - so even better one might think to observe the word traditional.
The market was at best a car boot quality flea market with cheap general store products for daily life. The harbour area covered in litter & rubbish. The surrounding cafes & restaurants advertising freshly caught fish at inflated prices. The picturesque views (Ok nicely painted boats bobbing amongst floating debris) with a backdrop that wouldn't be out of place in a sci fi movie with a massive container type ship on one side & a power station on the other.
The only traditional we could find was the all the locals playing one massive game of bingo in the town square!
Worth driving to through the terrible Maltese traffic congestion? Worth sitting on a bus on the circular route to get to? Worth getting excited about the local market? Worth looking forward to seeing a picturesque Maltese fishing village?
ANSWER - frankly NO!!! a disappointment on all levels
