Calypso report

Had a 2 week stay at this hotel. Mr Rappa and his team of restaurant staff are excellent. The quality, presentation and choice of the food was first class. The majority of the waiters and waitresses were really friendly and helpful. The chefs were always on hand to explain anything. The breakfast room and the rooftop terrace are wonderful with lovely views of Marsalforn Bay.
Our room was ok but was at the rear and the only view was the street opposite, not very inspiring. The room was spotlessly clean however, as was the rest of the hotel. These rooms have a tiny balcony with no room for chairs and no view to look at and therefore no opportunity to enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine on your balcony, which was very disappointing. The public areas and corridors lack character and the hotel is lacking in a "social" area such as a lounge bar. Gozo is a beautiful island and pictures of the area would brighten up the corridors. The rooftop pool area is very cramped and unimaginative but there is really no room to improve this. We were redirected to this hotel as our holiday company, Mercury Holidays, let us down completely by booking us into our choice of hotel then telling us the original choice had no accommodation. We expressed our disappointment about the room to the reception staff but they were unwilling to help. The reception staff really need a lesson on customer relations. It is always a good idea to acknowledge guests and make an effort to talk to them! Although we enjoyed our holiday we probably won't return to this hotel. We would certainly not recommend Mercury Holidays.

Room Tip: Push for a sea view room otherwise there is no view.

We stayed at The Calypso for four nights and had an excellent time. Our large, comfortable room had a lovely secluded balcony that looked over the very picturesque harbour. So plenty to look at and surprisingly quiet at night. The food was brilliant, one evening we ate on the rooftop terrace - wonderful. Generally the staff were friendly, helpful and professional altho the Reception staff could be a bit more welcoming - a smile works wonders!
My one and only gripe was the bed linen - it needs to be totally replaced. The beds were comfortable but the old, worn and badly fitting sheets, pillow slips and lumpy pillows need to be burnt! Sorry - other than that it was a perfect 4 days!

Stayed here as part of a package organised by Calypso Diving.
I do feel that the star rating of 4 is a bit too high and would rate as a very good 3 star establishment.
Plus points are the excellent breakfast and the majority of the staff. Also the hotel is in a prime location overlooking the small harbour and Marsalforn bay. The small rooftop pool is great for young children or as a cooling down splash for others. Bar and snack service was good with regular visits from staff to service any requests direct to the sunbeds.
We did not use dining facilities in the evening as there are numerous restaurants around the bay.
The room we were allocated was at the rear and very quiet. It was very basic but adequate for our needs as we only used it for sleeping. Air con. was a little noisy but not too disturbing. Fan was helpful and quiet. Cleaning was regular and good. Old fashioned TV but we never switched it on.
Internet was ok if you requested additional login details from reception.
Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Delightful 3 night stay as part of a Mercury Holidays tour. Clean, tidy, great balcony view over bay at Marsalforn. room with double bed - rare in continental hotels in our experience. Highlight was rooftop dining area where we had dinner by candlelight served to the table - not buffet style for a change. Friendly attentive staff overseen by a hands on manager who clearly enjoyed presenting good food.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to have outward facing Windows. Side and front rooms have sea view balconies.

Sammy and the entire hotel staff are making the difference to other hotels!

I was very pleasantly surprised by the variety of fresh dishes for breakfast! Fresh fruit, veg, cheeses, antipasti and lovely pastry are presented in a fabulous manner- that alone would be perfect for me BUT there is also hot food which pleases mediterranean, English and German taste buds! But if all this options still do not satisfy you- you have a chef there every morning who will prepare omelette or eggs the way you desire!
The Dining area on the rooftop has a breathtaking view and the kind staff is extremely attentive, knowledgeable and friendly-they basically read your wishes just by looking at you! Every dish I have tried had a very high quality and the portions were absolutely satisfying! I could Go on and on about the details!- ask me if you have questions!
I have shared my experience with my friends and family, they all agreed on visiting Hotel Calypso and Gozo, which is also on my list for the next year's treats!
