This hotel has an upscale urban vibe. The location to shopping, eating, and walking around Reykajavik is excellent. I was initially worried when looking at the map that it would be a bit of a walk to the center of things, but it ended up being a couple of turns around the block and then we popped right onto the hub of the main area. We stayed here at the beginning and end of our trip and both rooms had plenty of room, were completely up to date, and very clean. We were able to park along the side of the building and was offered parking in the garage below, if needed. The breakfast in the morning was one of the best of our entire trip with just about anything you could want- plenty of meat and vegetarian options. In the end, I felt like the cost of the hotel was a bargain compared to what it offered and the other accommodations on our trip. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at the Skuggi hotel during our second time to Iceland, as a result of taking advantage of the optional layover when travelling by IcelandAir to America. When we pulled up outside it looked like a typical inner city hotel - a large box like structure. The inside and rooms are minimalistic but clean and stylish. The location is great - just a short walk from the main streets of Reykjavík and less than 10 mins to the nearest pool. The breakfast was one of the best I’ve ever had (scrambled eggs that aren’t rubbery!) and the staff were extremely helpful and attentive. When I go back to Iceland, I would not hesitate to go to the Skyggi hotel again.

My booking at Hotel Skuggi was expensive, possibly the most expensive per night hotel booking I have ever made. But that’s Iceland – everything is relatively expensive, from hotels to bags of sweets.

Regarding location, the hotel is positioned off-centre, but in a good way. It’s close to one end of Reykjavik’s nicest street, good for eating, shopping and promenading.

The hotel tries to get a stylish ‘boutique’ look, but it isn’t convincing. Actually, I think most furnishings in my room came from Ikea, and they had an Ikea weakness that makes them not ideal for hotel room use: low-density particle board / fibreboard with thin laminate, they are easily damaged and show the damage. Most of my furniture looked a bit battered and tired.

My room was not as clean as I expected: there was dust at the backs of shelves, on the clothes rail, and on some other surfaces. That’s a problem with black furniture (all my furnishings were black): it readily shows dust.

I paid extra for a relatively large room with double bed, and yes, the room was relatively big. However, it had strangely little storage space. A short rail for hanging a few clothes, and a black Ikea ‘Kallax’ shelf unit with four small shelves. Frustrating; despite having a fair amount of space, I spent the week being cluttered up by my own stuff because there was nowhere to put it all away. I didn’t want to put anything on the floor because that, being black wood-effect laminate, showed dust too.

Breakfast was adequate, nothing special, but not bad.

In conclusion, Hotel Skuggi was okay, served me adequately for a week, but wasn’t great, and I expected better for the price.

Dear Robert16,

Thank you very much for your feedback. We highly value reviews from our guests in order to improve our service.
You are correct, Iceland is a bit pricey but I am sure it´s nature and everything is has to offer is a nice payback.

I am slightly saddened to read we have not been able to go above and beyond your expectations during your stay as excellent customer service, cleaning standards and great breakfast is definitely something that distinguishes us from others.

I can assure you that there is no Ikea furniture at Skuggi.

I'll share your feedback with our team so we can address the issues you mentioned and improve future visits for our guests.

I also hope that you will consider staying with us again so that we can have another chance to provide you with a superior experience we are know for.

All the best,

We travelled to Reykjavik to see the Northern Lights and to experience Iceland in the winter. Our second day was a beautiful clear day, and following heavy snow the previous day our trip to see the geysers, waterfalls was magical, the winter landscape sparkled in the sun. Anyway back to the hotel - there are no large hotels in Reykjavik, but Skugggi was in a great location just up from the bay and near to the centre of town. The breakfast was very good, and I became a fan of Skyr yoghurt and the Icelandic Rye bread. The hotel has a "back packers" feel and the room we had was very small, no wardrobe just a hanging rail and also not much space either side of the bed, so try and book the largest room you can. Although the bed and pillows were very comfortable.

Room tip: Rooms are very small so would suggest looking to book the largest room possible.

Good location. It’s located at the end of the main streets, so I had easy access to anywhere. It’s near the bus stop 9 and 10. (within 1-2 minuets on foot)
The room is clean and comfortable!
I like the breakfast. It contains hot meal and cold meal. From 3:00 am, the hotel offers pastry, coffee, and tea for the early departure.

The only complaint is no refrigerator in the room.
