Great location, average stay, good breakfast

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Apr 2024via mobile
Location brilliant for Central City & entrance modern, with lovely four star lounge area, breakfast included is a must in Iceland & this was a standard buffet, our room was modern Scandinavian style however small (not like picture with white sofas, limited storage considering we had heavy winter coats, & lots of jumpers & thermal tops, there were 2 small drawers, no coat hooks, 10 hangers with a pull out trouser rack, the shower room was small also with a plastic curtain that stuck to you while you showered annoyingly, the hair dryer wired next to the WC so as you dry hair the wire trailed across this as mirror was above sink, 1 small bath towel & hand towel per person, no robes or slippers considering there was a spa !!!! No where to store suitcases & a desk chair that was in the way wherever it was in the room, the bed was hard & uncomfortable but the duvets were thick (2 single supplied) the room temperature was cosy & easy to control, toiletries supplied were great but tea making facilities were meagre with powder milk sachets & zero snacks, mini bar prices extortionate, nearby Kronnan supermarket supplies at fraction of price. The staff were ok & did not go out of way to greet you & some ignored completely as you left of entered the building, we did not visit the small spa & wasn’t offered any promotion to do so .

Overall I’d rate this a 3 star 🌟

We visited for a 4 night break and found the hotel staff to be very accommodating, helpful and personable. The hotel was in a great location for nipping in and out during the day and also for the bus stops for excursions. On the first night we did experience some noise but was easily solved by closing our window so wasn’t a problem. We had a standard room which had a very comfortable bed, pillows and linens, shower room and tea coffee making facilities. We were however, situated in a top floor room which had a sloping ceiling each side of our bed and I did give myself a knock on the side of my head getting into bed - ouch! Just to be aware.
The breakfast was beautifully presented with all anyone could wish for. It was very tasty and set us up each day for our activities.
Overall a fab holiday and would stay again, thank you for your kind
hospitality.

This was a great place to stay right on the shopping strip. You’re close to everything downtown, including the bus stops for excursion pickups. The only downside was that the spa was closed when I arrived and it was one of the reasons I chose that hotel in the first place.

This hotel was ideal for our trip. It is within walking distance of all things downtown: museums, shopping, the sea. It is nestled in the middle of the HOHO circuit, with access to excellent bus routes and arteries through the city. The hotel lounge area is comfy and well designed. The breakfast is comprehensive and definitely a perfect start to a day. The staff are professional and friendly, eager to help solve any problem that might arise. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again on my next trip to Iceland.

First stay in Iceland, the hotel was in a central location, and the room was large with a separate sofa and large bathroom. There was also plenty of wardrobe space.

We stayed on a B&B basis, and breakfast was good, it was a continental style breakfast with hot & cold items. Plenty to choose from.

We used the hotel bar, and there's good seating in the hotel lobby to enjoy a drink.

We stayed at Thingholt by Center from 22 March - 25 March 2024.

The location is absolutely perfect - it was a 3 minute walk to bus stop 3 which was used by the airport transfer service. It was also a 15 minute walk to Hlemmur Square where the local buses left from (we were going to use this to get the bus to Sky Lagoon). It was also a 3 minute walk to Bus Stop #6 - Safnahúsið The Culture House which was used by two different tours we went on.

There are lots of restaurants and bars within a short walk.

The staff were very attentive throughout our stay. The only negative was that the hot items at breakfast (hash browns / sausages / bacon) were cold on all 3 mornings that we ate. We are at a variety of times depending on our tour time so this seemed to be a constant throughout our stay.

The room we stayed in was quite snug but it didn’t particularly matter as you’re out of the hotel for most of the day anyway.

As extra information:
We did the small group tour to the Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon - I would highly recommend this. Our guide, Tron, was incredible.

We also did the small group tour to the South Coast - while the sights we saw were incredible, I do think you could definitely do it cheaper by hiring a car as almost all of the locations we went to were free and didn’t require a ticket - also our guide provided very limited information.

We walked down to the sea front and managed to see the Northern Lights one night as a waiter said they were already showing during our meal. This was incredible and saved a lot of money. We were able to visibly see them with our eye, as well as through our phone. I do think a tour would be worth it, however, as they take you away from the city and therefore away from the light pollution.

It was approximately 3 degrees during our stay which for Iceland, isn’t that cold. However, I was very glad I’d packed a lot of warm items as on the last day when I wasn’t wearing thermals as we were leaving for the airport, I was cold. For the rest of the stay, I wore thermal base layers, fleece leggings, merino wool socks, a north face thermotec fleece, a mountain warehouse ski jacket, and thick snow gloves. I wore walking boots too which were better than snow boots that I saw some people walking in, as they didn’t seem to have much dexterity when climbing stairs etc.

Also, prepare for how expensive food and drink is. While I had read this before our travel, I was shocked at the reality. It was approximately £25 pp for a lunch time fish and chips and a can of Fanta, £9 for a pint, a glass of wine was usually around £13, and a aglio El olio pasta dish one night was £24 and £16 for a glass of house red.
