Very good hotel, excellent location!, some drawbacks.

Review of 101 Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Dec 2023
Our room #405 overlooked the Harpa Concert Hall (beautiful modern glass building with the harbor and the mountains behind it), the Culture House, a city park, was right next to Bus Stop #6 for Flybus (airport shuttle) and tour/ excursion pick-up's, and was within a 10-15 minute walk to many attractions, restaurants and shopping. Location amazing! No special perks as others have mentioned even though part of the Marriott system. Was not extraordinarily expensive given that many hotels are very very expensive in Reykjavik.
Pros: Lobby and bar beautiful. Staff courteous, friendly and efficient. Very clean, comfortable beds. Liked the modern aesthetic of the room. Lots of light through the windows, but with well fitted black out shades (not needed as much for us given December). Great desk with multiple outlets overlooking the view. We went to a bar across the street for dinner, Islenski Barinn - reasonably priced, very lively (long line out the door, though we got there at a lucky moment and got right in), very friendly and welcoming, and the food was terrific!
Cons: No outlets next to either side of the bed, really unacceptable! No teapot or coffee pot, major bummer in the mornings. Halls are very dimly lit. The bathroom and bedroom are wide open to each other, that's not so appealing, though the glass enclosure around the toilet was fine. A bit more storage/ bigger closet would have been appreciated.
We were there off season so the hotel was sparsely occupied and no loud noise from neighboring restaurants/ bars, but I could see this as a potential problem during holidays/ in high season.

Terrible avoid this hotel! A lack of staff and poor service from those that are there. I wrote a great review of this hotel in 2015 this was one of the best hotels in Iceland. Now I suggest you never go here, it’s sadly fallen no help with bags, no cooked food at the hotel, rude staff, making help the guests last of their priorities, poorly trained staff and even forgot our event was happening a total joke from start to finish. Management need to be fired and this can come back to being a great hotel

Overall I was impressed with the hotel, the staff, breakfast, the design and the location was super,, however; there was no sound proofing at all. Our room faced the street and at night we could hear people talking and yelling after leaving a bar across the street. The hotel shares a wall with a nightclub that had really loud music and our room was right next to it. It started about 11 or 12 midnight. We could not sleep. We could feel vibrations from the music. So for most of our visit we were not well rested. I don’t like to write bad reviews but had I known this before I would not have stayed there.

We stayed at the 101 Hotel on both ends of our 7 night Tour of Iceland. The 101 is nicer than any of the hotels encountered along the Rim Road (we stayed in 6 different hotels).
Location is great. Within walking distance of the main town area - nice restaurants and shops. We also saw the Northern lights one night by walking near the water around the Sun Explorer statue.
As mentioned in other reviews, the hotel is affiliated with Marriott. So, you get points but Elites don’t get upgrades or free breakfast. There are wonderful bakeries nearby.
On our arrival for the 2nd night we were unexpectedly upgraded to a corner King room. Room 407. (Any room ending in “07” would be the same). It was huge with great views of the city. We were super fortunate. Hotel is pricey but so is Iceland.
Staff were very nice to us and we enjoyed our stay. Would love to return.

Beautifully designed rooms and a fantastic location and view (if you get the bay side rooms). Food options were expensive so suggest going to the town for alternatives. Walking distance to major Reykjavik attractions.

Note as a Marriott platinum, you do not get free breakfast per the Marriott manual.

Two couples and my husband and I visited this Hotel (and various others around the Ring Road). All other experiences were quite good and as we had hoped, but this Hotel is a MUST AVOID. The rooms were dirty. The maid service was about on part with a 7 year old. The staff couldn't have been less willing to help. We don't consider our group as having unusually high standards, but this place was basically a dump with pricing like a castle. Handles were missing; the shower took at least 10 minutes to arrive at a tolerable temperature; the TV, Cel and internet service were spotty, at best (and that's generous). Again, there are amazing choices in this City. Avoid the 101 Hotel like the plague.
