“Casual, intimate restaurant with very good food”
Review of Ostabudin

Ostabudin

Certificate of Excellence
Price range: USD 9 - USD 30
Cuisines: Seafood
Description: Food connoisseurs and other gastronomes have ever since the year 2000 slipped into our basement during lunch hour to feast on various delicacies. But of course everyone knows that because ever since the restaurant opened for business it has been the least kept secret in the area. Ostabuðin has truly been an oasis on Skolavorðustigur because we have tried our best to offer a wide varaity of fresh and curious products which have tickled our patrons taste buds and in turn trickled salivating reflexes in the city center. Even though we have taken some pride in the queue that has formed outside our entrance every single day during lunch break for the past 15 years we have finally expanded our premises. Thus we can now welcome our patrons from dawn til dusk and offer them a variety of fish and meat dishes which we have refined with passion. Of course there is also a lot of cheese on the menu and now we can also serve wine with our fare. Our daily specials always include both a fish dish and a soup during lunch hour on weekdays. Do not hesitate to ask what is on offer today. Also, our seafood soup never disappoints. Our guests might have to share tables during the lunch hour rush but who knows – maybe you will make new friends. Bon appetit, Joi.

This small but noisy restaurant has a limited menu but everything that we had was very good. For appetizers, we ordered a beet salad with turnips, goat cheese, and kale and the baked camembert with red currants sauce, grapes, and toast points. Our main courses, with glasses of very pleasant red and white wines, were a lamb (slices of lamb fillet plus pulled lamb) over peas, potatoes, and something else good and an Artic Char over coleslaw, mashed potatoes, and celery. We did not have enough room at the end for dessert. The service was pleasant and courteous. Reservations appear to be required.

Traveling in Iceland by myself. decided I wanted to try some local cuisine.
This place was relaxed with friendly staff with a nice venue and atmosphere. Aside from being pricey just like everything else is in Iceland I really enjoyed my meal which included whale and reindeer. Both were delicious.

We got here before the crowd (yes it was raining again!) and had a terrific lunch. I had the Brushetta sandwich (Surrano ham, tomatoes, and Mozzarella) while my pal had the fish of the day which was linncod served atop medley of vegetables with a light but flavorful sauce - photos attached. Many locals were eating there at the same time and this is always a good sign for us.

Fantastic staff and amazing food. We can recommend two dishes that we tried. Arctic char and the cod. A must do in Reykjavik. Really cozy place.

Stopped her as part of a city food tour and tried three cheeses and three meats. The gouda was very mild and the local 'gold' cheese was delicious. Iceland really knows how to do great dairy products. Meats were good, too.
