Scam Hotel wth no Customer Service

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 June 2021
The hotel has decided to close down after we booked our hotels for a July visit. We were given no notice; email or phone call. We only happened to see it when looking again online ahead of our trip. Multiple emails have been sent to the hotel with no reply. When calling directly, agent told us our rooms (now in a closed down hotel) were non refundable and she cant do anything. Was then told to email the same address that has ignored all previous attempts to rebook. Scam, Stay far away from this hotel.

I’ve stayed here three times. And so have friends. We do not exaggerate when saying their breakfast buffet compared to any hotel we’ve lodged at (globally) has no equal. It’s that good.

The rooms are typically Icelandic: efficient and just enough room to do the job. These are not apartment sized rooms, but if you want an apartment rent that! The hotel is matches exactly what it offers. In all respects. And for being fairly busy and in a great location, it has a cozy atmosphere. The drinks at the bar are one of a kind and live local music is not uncommon.

Highest recommendation. Did I mention the breakfast? :-)

I loved our stay at the Marina Hotel. It's a wonderful hotel, so interestingly decorated to show the character and uniqueness of Iceland. It's a great location within walking distance of the main attractions of Reykjavik. The rooms were very nice and clean with huge, comfy beds. The hotel was next to the marina (as per the name) so it was convenient as we went almost nightly on the boat tours to try and see the Northern Lights and the tours left from the marina. The staff were amazing and very friendly, we checked in and out throughout our 1 week in Iceland (because of different tour excursions etc) and they were very accommodating. The amenities are nice; there is a great gym with a rock climbing wall and a small bar. The breakfast didn't have much variety but it was still delicious and good for a quick meal before leaving for excursions/tours. Loved my stay there and I recommend it for other travellers going to Reykjavik!

I absolutely loved my stay at Marina. My friend and I came to REK on a last-minute holiday, it was my second time in the city and her first. I chose the hotel based on location - last time I was in REK I did not stay in city center and deeply regretted having to walk 1.5 miles from downtown to the hotel. Taxis/FHV are scarce and expensive in REK, and last time we didn't get the hang of the public bus until near the end of our trip. This time, Marina is in the old harbor part of town, just out of the most touristy downtown area but merely a 15 minute walk away. It's also walking distance to the residential/industrial area behind the old harbor where there's supermarkets like Bonus. Mostly I chose it because it's less than a block away from Saegriffin (aka Sea Baron for English-speakers), my favorite Icelandic hole in the wall. For the first day of our trip, the hotel computers were down but they still managed to check us in without problems or delay. The room was small but had a mini fridge, a little balcony facing the harbor, a safe in the closet and a good size bathroom with nice shower amenities. The water pressure was stellar (I love showers in Iceland! Always so hot!). Our safe was not working when we checked in, but we called the front desk and they sent someone to fix it immediately. The room was clean and neatly made up each night, and not overly accessorized with tons of cushions/etc. We made use of the nice wool throws to stay cozy at night, and actually opened our window slightly to feel air circulation. We were on the second floor, and just overlooked the little pickup spot for buses, which can be a little loud at 7 a.m. when people are chatting while talking.
The ground floor of the hotel was interesting - lots of meeting rooms with couches and communal tables, a fire place with couches in the main meeting area, and a restaurant/bar at one end that is open rather late with reverse happy hour specials. We were there at the beginning of February so the hotel was not busy and we mostly had the hotel to ourselves. The basement has a meeting area with lots of bathrooms, which was very convenient for us to use without needing to go up to our room. We didn't have a chance to try the hotel restaurant/bar or the restaurants nearby other than Saegriffin, which I insisted on eating at every day (twice a day if I could manage it), but there's some good ones nearby. It was a bit confusing when transferring from the Flybus at the airport to the smaller hotel dropoff bus as there are two hotels named Marina, and they are next to each other but one is a hotel and the other I believe more like short-term apt rentals. But since they are next to each other, directing the driver to Marina hotel is good enough to get you there. I would love to stay here again!

The hotel was clean and very accommodating. The restaurant was OK for breakfast but you can do much better with a short walk. We were there the week before the shut down and it was very slow which was actually perfect but always enjoy meeting people as well.

The staff was accommodating and it was especially nice, to have a small refrigerator in the unit. The grocery store is right around the corner and made the trip A LOT less expensive.

Easy walking distance to town, restaurants, the water, bars etc.

Happy Hour was with out a doubt the best. Highly recommend the Whiskey Sour.

Room tip: Rooms on the street side can be a bit noisy but we didn't mind the traffic.

We stayed at Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Marina because it came recommended on a blog that we read. And all in all, it was pleasant. It is located right next to the Marina at the end of the long street that has the harbor, other hotels, and restaurants.

Inside:
The inside of the hotel was really fun, quirky, and modern. They have a bar located inside and you will find MANY posters directing you to try it around the hotel.

The room:
VERY SMALL, but served its purpose and was still very charming. We got a marina view which was gorgeous even with alot of the work sites located right outside. You get a nice view of the ocean and mountains if you look past the construction work. We even had a cute little balcony. The bed was very comfortable. My only issue was the bathroom which was TINY! The sink is the size of a large bowl and which made teeth brushing or makeup removal a little messy. The shower isnt enclosed so the water runs through the entire bathroom. Other than that the room was great for our weekend stay.

Food:
We had the breakfast 2 out of our 4 days and it as yummy. They serve "enough" but it isnt extravagant by any means. Eggs, bacon, oatmeal, yogurt, bread and jam, and veggies. It is quite expensive for what they serve but it was convenient on excursion days.

Location:
It was overall a beautiful location right by the marina and having the ocean and mountain view. One of the best perks was the Blue Bus shelter that is RIGHT OUTSIDE, which was perfect for all day tours and excursions since the busses pick you up right there. If you choose to stay here and are booking day trips DO NOT get the "Blue Bus Shelter" which is located right outside confused with "Bus stop Number 4" which is down the street. Most day trips ask where you'd like to be picked up and dropped off and a few guest complained that they weren't aware the two stops were different, after missing a bus.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay.
