Stayed here for one night and want to stay again, after being unable to book the sleeper train to Kolari for the saturday night we rearranged our holiday to include a night in Helsinki and found this very unique hotel

Converted from the former Helsiki Prison it is a stand out building and hotel that has been very tastefully converted to a 4 star hotel

We stayed as a party of 3 in on of the 4 "Junior Suites" in the hotel as a treat and were not let down, the room had already been prepared with the sofa bed already made up with linen and bedding. The main bed was HUGE and could sleep a small family in itself !

Very clean, well kept and appointed room with the usual amenities provided but the stand out of the suites is an in-room suana provided adjacent to the bathroom for exclusive use, sits 3 / 4 people in comfort and provided a great heat which did not leak out into the bathroom or room.

We dined later on after an appetite building walk in the in house "Jailbird" restaurant, excellent quality food in a quirky enviroment, tin cups provided for table water and staff dressed as jaliers and inmates but all very well done and not in a tacky / novelty "DIsney" style.

Like anywhere in Finland food and alcohol is more expensive then the UK but its worth paying for it here for the quality and novelty of the surroundings.

As we had an early check out at 08:00 the next morning we had an early breakfast as soon as the restaurant opened at 07:30 and a very good selection of hot and cold foods were provided in a buffet offering, meatballs and wiener sausages were very stange to be eating at that hour of a sunday morning !

Loved this hotel so much i have booked again to stay in mid june of this year, again in one of the junior suites

Room Tip: Definatly dine in the Jailbird restaurant just for the experience let alone the food, if you can find a well priced deal on the Junior suites on the comparison websites then do it.

Helsinki airport to here at midnight was 22 minutes by cab costing 46 Euros. We stayed for 2 nights but booked months ago so it was great value. It's a very interesting building to stay in and it's good that they have kept so many original features. Good breakfast buffet selection, we ate in their Jailbird restaurant one night and had a fantastic steak that wasn’t overpriced as it usually is in a hotel restaurant. There is a tram stop outside the door that takes you right into the centre and it's only 5 minutes walk to the Viking line terminal if you're going over to Tallinn.

I stayed there for a couple of nights on business and after reading the TA comments thought I would try a quirky hotel for a change.
Having arrived, I was checked in quickly and efficiently and had a room on the ground floor. The staff were dressed in prisoner stripy uniforms or wardens outfits which was slightly amusing. They have made the place very inviting without losing the prison charm. Better decor, lighting and carpets do wonders. The room I had was great with quality fixtures and fittings. I had a large TV and a minibar along with a kettle with tea/coffee making facilities. The TV showed mainly local channels but there was a couple of English news channels. The bathroom was lovely and clean with quality fixtures again but had only a walk-in shower. The walk-in shower had a large head so provided a tropical rain shower feel. The wifi is a bit sketchy because of the thick walls but there is an ethernet cable point if you have a cable to connect to your computer or you can request one from the front reception. The wifi is fast in Helsinki and even at the airport Im impressed at their free wifi speeds.
Breakfast is held in the restaurant downstairs and has the usual breakfast fair amongst some odd ones like pickled herrings etc. Its not the best Ive seen as it is geared up to the local market but there was enough for me to choose from. I had the chance to try the restaurant in the evening and it was very good. I was served by an elderly gentleman in a wardens outfit who spoke very good English. He looked after me very well and recomended items from the menu according to my taste. If hotel management is reading this, then I would like to point out that he was the best member of staff during my stay.
The location of the hotel is slightly out of town but I did walk around the area and enjoyed it. It was February so I didn't stay out too long as it was still cold.
I would happily return to this hotel if I should return to Helsinki.

Can't recommend this hotel highly enough. It is a crown in the jewel of Best Western (which only has a few of those).

Good food, great receptionists, fantastic rooms (the suites have their own sauna!!!) and all just a tram ride away from Helsinki town centre on the bizarre ex-Russian peninsula of Katajanokka, in a ex-Russian penitentiary!

The location is quite convenient, as the Katajanokka area is really nice, and the city center is within just 15-25 min walk. The bed is fine, and the room is very well equipped (fridge, tea-coffee, etc.). Own parking in the yard is a definite plus (if you travel by own car, of couse), because finding a parking in Helsinki center is annoying. The price was much better than at other hotels of similar level. But still the atmosphere of the prison is all around, and I realized that I don't like it. The rooms are fine, but the black color of the lamps keeps reminding where you are. I didn't find it attractive at all.

Room Tip: 1st floor is in the basement. 2nd is ground-level. total 4
