A warm welcome from the owner who met us on the main road late at night and took us to the accommodation. The ground floor apartment was spacious with a good shower but no views whilst 1st floor apartment was smaller with shower over the toilet yet it had lovely balcony views of sea and mountains. Cooking facilities were basic with a single hot plate. Set in a secluded olive grove with a short walk to the beach and 5 mins by car to nearest village for tavernas and groceries. I would go again.
We stayed at Ktima Tzamika for three months this year. Although only 600 metres from the New National Road and sea, the house is in a rural setting surrounded by olive trees with only one near neighbour. The cicadas are loud in July, but calmer in August and quiet in September. You awake to the sounds of the cock crowing next door, sheep baaing as they are herded down the road and cats awaiting you on the doorstep hoping for a tasty morsel. The beach is long, sandy and quiet and the sea varies from calm to rough depending on the wind that is characteristic of Crete. The nearest Cretan village, Episkopi is 2 Km away and has some beautiful Venetian architecture and friendly locals. The nearest tourist resort is Kavros, 4 kilometres to the east via the main road and the popular tourist town of Georgioupolis is another couple of kilometres further on. To the west, the lovely town of Rethymno is approximately 15 kilometres away. Buses run along the New National Road hourly although the house lies between two stops so a 1 Km walk along the road is required, therefore unless you are keen walkers, own transport is recommended to explore the area. The house is divided into several apartments and the accommodation we used had one bedroom, a shower / toilet and a sitting / kitchen / dining room. The cooking facilities are limited to a two ring hob and a toaster and kettle were provided when requested. Eating outside on the terrace looking around the olive grove and watching the sheep pass in the road is a pleasure. Laundry was no problem with access to an automatic washing machine and a line hung between the trees. The owners, Michalis and Anna, who spend their time travelling between their main home in Iraklio, Ktima Tzamika and other properties that they rent out in and around Kissamos, are friendly and hospitable and gave us generous gifts of oil and home grown fruits.
