We were originally trying to book into the Phaedra, another small hotel in a good central Athens location. It was full , so we've never stayed there and can't compare the two. However, we were very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the Metropolis, our "second choice" accommodation. The location, on the street of the same name (or Mitropoleos) and half way between Syntagma (Syndagma) and Monastiraki Squares, was ideal, across from the old cathedral, with many small local restaurants nearby and in easy walking distance to the Greek Agora and Roman Forum, Hadrian's Library, the Acropolis, the New Acropolis Museum, and so on. The rooms were basic (80 euro/night for a double), clean and adequate, and ours had a window opening onto the street and the cathedral, and the breakfast was standard, for an additional 5 euro/person. Besides the friendly Tsiaktanis family, one of the highlights of this hotel is the gorgeous bougainvillea that covers the front of the hotel. Not only could we see the Acropolis from our hotel, we could pick out our hotel, by the bright pink bougainvillea, from the top of the Acropolis!
