The setting for this villa was magical - Douro River, great sunrises and sunsets. This very modern villa also had many virtues: 5 bedrooms; air conditioning; swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room. Once there, this place with its well stocked kitchen, was comfortable. Our biggest problems with this rental were as follows:
Location - this place is not easily accessible-it is located at the bottom of narrow, twisty, cobble stone roads that can be heartstopping to navigate. We had to call the owner twice to ask that she send someone over to guide us to the house. We got repeatedly lost when returning to the house after dark. The villa’s address could not be located on either of the 2 GPS’s that we had (we rented an automatic because driving the manual car we rented was.too scary). This is not the kind of place where you can go out for dinner with drinks in an easy way. We should have been warned about the challenges of geography and the isolation of the place. Maybe we should have done more of our own research. Other issues: there were no instructions about how to use anything in this high tech house - lighting, TVs, ice maker, washer/dryer, spa equipment, etc. we (there were 5 of us) spent countless hours trying to figure things out. There was a step.between the living room and bedroom area that caused 2 of us to fall. The bed in the only windowless bedroom was hard as concrete. On the plus side - there were organic gardens, whose produce was available to us. This would be a great place for a hermit.
