overall we had a great stay, the highlight being the plush hotel room with sea views as far as the eye can see. massive bed (7ft?) and flashy tv / furniture / fittings. we heard the building work occasionally but it was not by any means constant, the hotel is quite quiet but we were there to relax and chill out so that was fine by us. the paradise restaurant next door served average food but you can sit right on the cliff edge overlooking the sea which is great. we had cloudy weather most days but it was still warm enough to sit by the pool, lots of rain overnight which was not a problem at all. food in the restaurant was very good, not cheap but great service too. would have been nice to have a bit more choice on the lunch menu, i asked for an omelette and was told it couldn't be done! it was wonderful to swim in the pool which seemed to merge into the ocean, the cable car up and toboggan down the hill were really good fun. would recommend this hotel!

Just returned from two great weeks at the CS Madeira. Had read about construction work ongoing and was a little afraid this would be a problem. But it wasn't. It was a pleasure to stay at this hotel. Great service, friendly people at the reception/front desk, in the restaurants, at breakfast, lunch, dinner or in the hotel bar. Great modern architecture, complete and fluent in style and furniture.

Main construction work was ongoing on the street side of the hotel while all the rooms face seaside. That never bothered us. The building apparently has good isolation. Also there was construction work ongoing on the floor above the pool and lunch/snack bar area, some days one could hear drilling while in the building but not too often. We had a great room, plenty of space, effective air condition and a marvelous sea view. Cleaned and properly taken care of by floor maids every day.

Just a few downsides; on their website it's said Internet access from the room. We did "hot pot" testing of the Wireless LAN and found it inadequate. At least on our floor it was totally useless. Either one had to bring Laptop down in the lobby which was one place it worked ok. Or one could use one out of two PC's in a so called business center. Where they never seemed to be able to fix the air condition. So it was a hot experience, some sweaty minutes while hastily reading mail (and be out).

Internet access could be purchased at the desk using vouchers. with username and password. In our opinion this service was outrageously high priced. 7 Euros pr. 2hrs is far too expensive, for a hotel this standard internet access should have been free of charge. AND with adequate hot stop coverage on all floors. Which they did not have, even in the bar near the reception it was dodgy and slow.

But work was not the purpose for staying there are we enjoyed our vacation to the fullest despite the somewhat pricey services. One would recommend that the hotel sets a modern standard and includes such services or offers it for free.

This was our third stay at this hotel, our previous visits were when it was a Crowne Plaza. This time we stayed for a fortnight. My wife and I had a room on the 10th floor ( top), my daughters were in room 407. Most rooms have an unobstructed sea AND sea platform view, however rooms below the 4th floor and those at the extreme ends of the 4th floor (including 407) do not. I would recommend 5th floor or above.

Obviously as it was our third visit we like the hotel. CS have refurbished the hotel and it has a predominantly grey, black and silver theme now which may be too austere for some. They have made some changes that could be considered a little retrograde e.g. they have now introduced a towel voucher at the pool on the sea platform, in the Crowne plaza days an attendant would set up your sunbed and umbrella and lay your towel out. They have also do not have an À la carte restaurant anymore. With regards to the tea and coffee making facilities they only supply one teabag per visit (i.e. one teabag for a 14 night stay). We queried this at reception who agreed it was a little cheap for a hotel purporting to be 5 star. Obviously the new management have not heard the expression "spoiling the ship for a happeth of tar". We too found one or two of the (female) reception staff a little curt although we troubled them very little.

With regards to the building work there are extensive works at the front of the hotel with two tower cranes. A smaller tower crane and compound is at the side. These works were not noisy during our stay but they are ugly.

What generally isn't mentioned in this Madeira forums is that this hotel has a genuine sea frontage allowing you to swim in the sea directly from the sea platform if you wish. The sea platform itself is spacious and attractive with two good sized pools. This part of the hotel is a cut above many others. Also the hotel is still within easy walking distance from Funchal. Many others in the hotel zone are further away.

Breakfast in the hotel was average with a typical European breakfast buffet. Nothing particularly special about it.

Nearby we found the restaurants Tokos, Villa Cipriani and Quinta Palmeira to be very good meriting more than one visit.

Overall a very clean, modern hotel with 'minimalist' furniture and layout in the rooms.

Although there is still some building work taking place nearby (there were 2 cranes to the front and 1 to the back), it generally couldn't be heard.

The staff at this hotel are courteous, polite and efficient.

The buffet breakfasts and evening meals are sumptous, with plenty of food available!

My only complaint is that the chairs provided on the balconies are small and uncomfortable!

Would definitely return but probably not until next year when the hotel building work is complete.

All the 5 stars classifications I gave have been always made thinking in quality and price.

This 5 star classification is, definitely, about hotel quality. It’s a 5 star, without any doubts!

I’ve been 3 days, at an international conference.

The hotel is very modern and full of facilities: swimming-pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, squash, bar with snooker and piano. Breakfast is great; all food is delicious and, don’t forget, you lunch “smelling” sea.

Every time I ask for something to the staff, I was well received.

About location, he is located 15 minutes walk from Funchal. And 3 minutes walk from a commercial center, with some restaurants near.

I advice, strongly, CS Madeira Hotel, if you want a higher quality service. It’s one of the best hotels I ever stayed.
