Get the cable car up to monte and then take the short walk to the cable car taking you down to the botanical gardens all on one ticket and return the same way for 29 euros. Botanical gardens very impressive especially the cacti, topiary and mosaic gardens. Would strongly recommend.

The gardens are stunning even in October, but felt the 'Tropical Bird Park' was tragic - many birds in spartan soulless cages, with no obvious stimulation. The plants are great, the birds are not. We took the cable car to Monte, then the second car from there to the gardens. Returning to Monte, we did the toboggan ride downhill towards Funchal - great fun. It made for a good afternoon out, but beware of overcharging taxis waiting to take you the rest of the way down - worth a haggle!

The books say to visit and they are quite right. The views are fantastic and the gardens are in distinctly separate areas flowing from one to the next. There is an interesting herbal area, a cactus garden, native Madeira flora, a centrepiece planting in splendidly colourful coleus, topiary and much, much more.
The pathways are quite steep in places and many are cobbled so sensible footwear is a good choice, but it is worth climbing about to enjoy the views of this beautiful island. There is a cafe with terrace offering more wonderful views, including the cable car run.

Having read previous reviews please note some people have reviewed the Botanical gardens and not the Presidents gardens! These are the small private gardens surrounding the Presidents residence on a hill near the cruise ship terminal. There is no cable car here, nor restaurants nor cafes! There are security guards on the gate and if the gates are open you are allowed in. There are small areas of beautiful flowers and shrubs, water features, parrots and peacocks. You can see the official car in a garage and there is a small private chapel to visit. There are also beautiful views over Funchal. You can wander around the gardens in less than hour. Well worth a visit if you are allowed in! The Botanical gardens are accessible via the cable car, you have to pay to enter and there are cafes, birds, cacti, orchids etc and take a few hours to walk around. But these are different gardens so read the correct reviews and don't be put off!

My girlfriend and I took the cable car up to these gardens, they are worth visiting. There aren't many flowers in bloom this time of year but the herbal area is still going strong and is worth a visit for the scratch"n"sniff guessing game. The gardens are beautifully maintained and there is a large variety of plants there, most the names are in portuguese, so if your like me you wont know too many, but that doesnt matter, its a nice day out, there is a bird enclosure on the far side of the gardens that has many different species (parrot, macau, peacock, ect) there is also a tortoise in the gardens, which was a surprise. The only thing about the garden is getting around is physically demanding, there is a lot of climbing steps up and down to the various areas, so if you're injured, very unfit or elderly you might find it difficult to get around. Other than this i would recommend going to see it, but it would be much more impressive in spring/summer. If you take the cable car, there is a ticket that includes entry to the garden, I believe it €16.50 for a round-trip and entrance to this garden.
