They almost have this place right.

Plus points:

1. It is a really pretty with a quaint garden
2. It is varied. Each room has a different focus of the collection that de Freitas and his wife built up in the middle of the last century
3. It is a manageable size. It was a domestic house - admittedly a pretty swanky one - but it is not a huge stately home or a sterile museum.
4. It is really good value - €3 a pop.
5. If you like tiles, there is a big collection in the adjacent building.
6 if you don’t like tiles that much you can pop your head in to be polite but don’t have to do any more.

Minus points:

Not enough information. Only a selection of the items are described in the free guide that is given to you on the way in and taken from you as you leave.

Don’t miss:

The collection of drinking vessels (from 16th century to a 1970s Chelsea FC mug) on the lower floor.

Something different for us to look round at only 3 euro. Half of it is an exhibition of tiles(!) and half of it the old family house (a bit like a National Trust property.

Some of the furniture in the main house was really beautiful. Clearly the owner was a great collector of interesting things. The only down side we found was that we felt as though we were being closely watched, even though our bags were kept at the cash desk. Perhaps this was made worse by the fact that we were the only people there,

I visited here before heading to the Santa Clara Monastery. Entry is 3 euros which alstroemerias gives ou entry to the tile Museum. I visited the tile Museum first and, while they were undoubtedly works of art, the information was all in Portuguese and I had to guess at the descriptions. They were nicely presented, though, with a contemporary feel, and a complete contrast to the House.

I really enjoyed walking through the lovely old house and seeing the furnishings and ornaments how they would have been lived. When I visit “living” Museums I always like the kitchens as they tend to be more in their original state and decor than other rooms and this was no exception, with the displays of copper saucepans and the Chen utensils.

The House is beautifully maintained and I enjoyed visiting.

Enjoyable visit to this house of a Funchal Lawyer with interesting antiques and artefacts. Locate in the centre of town.
