“A great place to stay in Funchal”
Reviewed 11 March 2017 for a stay in February 2017

This is a well appointed and well equipped apartment perfectly placed to enjoy everything that Funchal has to offer. The apartment is spacious and beautifully furnished. Wifi is excellent and the reserved parking perfect for your hire car on an island where parking is at a premium. We'd recommend a hire car to see the best of the island, the bus system and tour buses are good but only to a point. The apartment is close to Santa Maria street where there is a wealth of restaurants to choose from, our favorite was Mozart but there is plenty of choice within a 10 minute stroll. We'd recommend the apartment and will visit again but remember that Funchal is the dog barking capital of the world so be prepared!

“Beautifully appointed and close to Old Town ”

This is a lovely apartment; bigger than it looks in the pictures and so well kitted out that you really could live in it. The view to the sea from the balcony is great and the walk to the town (old and new parts) is short and really interesting (as with all Madeira the walk back involves a hill). The public sea swimming area is straight down the hill and we loved it there. Owner Henri is so friendly and helpful. We would definitely return. Thanks Henri for all your help.

“Spacious and light apartment with great view”

We had a wonderful break in this apartment. We arranged for a taxi via the property manager and this meant we had a really relaxed transfer to the apartment without any waiting about. We were met by the property manager, Helena, who had laid out the dining table for lunch, which is a great touch as it made us feel really welcome. Helena explained the various keys and everything we needed to know about the apartment.
The apartment is really clean and spacious and has everything you could need. The pool is easy to access and was mostly free when we wanted to use it. The pool looked to be well maintained and cleaned. The Wi-Fi worked well and there is even a PC and printer to use. This was a great help printing out boarding passes for the return journey and a hire car voucher.
The location is really great as it is only a five minute walk to the edge of the old town, where you can find the main restaurant area of the tourist centre, near the cable car ground station. Walking in this direction is pretty straightforward as it is generally downhill. The return is a little harder as it is uphill. If you don't fancy that, the 38 bus stops just outside the road to the apartment. This leaves the town centre, by the harbour, near the cable car ground station, approximately every half an hour until 20:40 and then 22:00. Tickets can be bought on the bus, but then can be recharged at kiosks by the bus station or in the large shopping centre in the town. To recharge, you will need cash as they don't take cards.
Our dining experiences were all positive except for one. We particularly liked the Grande Muralha (a Chinese restaurant), O Regional (on the seafront near the cable car), the rooftop of the Madeira Story (also near the cable car), the Ritz near the tourist office (we had a great dinner on the balcony) and a small café on the promenade, where they also did lovely desserts.
What we especially enjoyed was the live music that we stumbled across one evening. In the square by the Capelo do Corpo Santo (from the apartment, cross the road, go straight ahead until you hit a T junction, go right, left, left again and then right and down steps into the square). We had live music here twice and the bands were really good. There are lots of restaurants in this area and all along the streets from here.
The best thing we did in the city was visit the Palace Gardens at Monte. We spent half a day there and could easily have spent all day there if we had wanted to walk along every pathway. We enjoyed the Oriental gardens especially, the minerals exhibition and the views over the city. We took the traditional toboggan back down the hill. This was very enjoyable and just has to be done. We enjoyed plenty of time wandering around the streets, popping in to churches and just taking everything in.
We also hired a car to see more of the island. Highlights for us were the natural swimming pools at Porto Moniz - you have to sit on the walls when the waves come rushing in! We liked Pico Do Arieiro (the highest point you can get to in a car) and the walk to the Balcoes viewing point a short drive away in Ribeiro Frio. This is a 20-25 minute level walk to a great viewpoint. If you fancy a nature walk but don't want to do a full levada, this is a gentle way of enjoying nature. We went to Machico and discovered quite a beach scene but also some good simple eateries and a full creperie and gelateria, which was great. We also went to Cabo Girao, the viewpoint with a glass floor, and to Nuns Valley (Curral das Freiras) and the viewpoint over it. We also spent half a day at the water park at Santa Cruz, which was a lot of fun.
Our favourite activity was a morning spent canyoning with epic madeira (shop at the waterfront). I went with my teenage daughter who hated the idea of it but within 5 minutes of starting the walk down the river was asking if we could come back the next day and do the intermediate course as she was enjoying it so much. Well worth the time, if you want to do something a little bit active. The guides are lots of fun and it is so beautiful in the interior.
All in all we had a brilliant break in Madeira.

“Beautiful apartment , great location.”

It's hard to say anymore than the other reviews , however the service from Helena is superb , she arranged transfers to and from the airport , the welcome pack she left for us was fantastic , we arrived early evening and didn't want to have to go to the supermarket so there was plenty to see us through until the next day. The apartment is beautiful , well furnished, lovely linens and towels ,everything is of the highest quality. The location is fantastic , just a couple of minutes to walk into the old town , supermarket is about 10 mins walk or a couple of minutes in a taxi (very reasonable prices) there is a bus stop at the bottom of the road if you want to go exploring. The pool area is lovely , very well maintained and most evenings when we came back after our days out we had the pool to ourselves. One of the restaurants Helena recommended was o'tasco ,round the corner from the lido , we made a reservation and we were not disappointed, the food is gorgeous and very reasonably priced. The end of our holiday was when the hill fires started so we could have been stranded at the airport like so many thousand other people , Helena managed to find us a beautiful room in her Quinta for the night at very short notice. Thanks to Helena for all her help and kindness. Madeira is a lovely place and this was a great experience. Would absolutely recommend Nora Bay.

“Simply Wonderful”

Simply WONDERFUL!!

Our stay at the Nora Bay Apartment was fabulous. The hosts Henrique and Helena could not have been nicer. Their hospitality was excellent. Firstly,
they arranged transfers to and from the airport so getting to the apartment could not have been easier.

On arrival they left a very generous welcome pack of wines, cheeses, milk , bread, water, beers and lots of local information on attractions etc.

The apartment itself was spotlessly clean and was even better in reality than the pictures online. We have been to many apartments in various places and this was definitely the best in terms of quality and facilities. There was not one item that we required that was not provided for!

The location was excellent. It was only a five minute walk from the old town of Funchal which had many lovely bars and restaurants. It was also not too high up in the hills which meant that it would be easily accessible for people who may find walking up hill too challenging.

On returning home we discovered that we had left valuables behind and again Henrique and Helena responded to this quickly and with great honesty so their aftercare service was also fabulous. We cannot thank them enough for that.

We will definitely return again and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this apartment to anyone wishing a relaxing luxurious holiday in Madeira. Thank you once again.
