Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

Came here in February. Windy and cold but sunny weather. Fantastic views of Sintra town proper. You also get a great view of Pena palace. No ramps here but great exercise while climbing the stairs but you will be rewarded with great views!

If you’ve got a healthy heart, this is totally walkable!! Touts/ sales people will tell you it’s too hard to walk up but don’t listen!! Save yourself €7 each (single) on the bus and enjoy the wonderful views both en route and when you get there. It’s €34 entrance to the castle for a family of 5. We thought it was worth it for the views although for the health and safety conscious, you’ll need to take many deep breaths!! Lunatic photographers circulate the castle trying all manner of daring poses ... pffftttt! Apart from that, it was brilliant and we’re so glad we made time to visit it. Views are splendid all around.

If you are visiting Pena Palace I would recommend finding time to look around the castle. It is easily walk-able from the Pena exit. The walk is very picturesque before you actually reach the castle. The views from the castle are superb. Be warned, there are a lot of steps and areas of uneven ground within the castle and some parts have quite a serious drop without any safety railings. A great castle though and worth a visit.

This is a beautiful place to explore, and comes with wonderful views of the surrounding area. There is not much to see except for the structure of the castle itself, but that is impressive enough. The surrounding park is a peaceful place to stroll. Overall, be prepared for stairs and hills.

If you are visiting the Pena castle it is worth taking the short walk to the Moors. This castle was constructed by the Moors in the 9th century to protect the fertile lands of Sintra and act as a lookout for Lisbon but was unable to defend against the Christian crusades in 1147.From the 12th century the importance of the castle waned and it became a ruin after fire and earthquake damage. King Fernando II (1816 –1885) was enchanted by the medieval period and set about restoring the castle. It is classified as a National Monument and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We decided to walk down to town from the Moors. It is an easy walk downhill.Go and enjoy the magnificent views.
