It's got a multitude of facades, influences and the colors used seemed to be something out of a Disney Palace. Really quite inventive. It's crowded, get there early. I wish I had been able to explore the grounds which seemed great for hiking. The village down below was nice, tipical of Europe. I liked it.

We were very lucky to be on a private tour with Tomas from Wonder Vans, he dropped us off at the alternate entrance which was great as it wasn’t crowded and our walk through the grounds was less busy. Sintra can get crazy busy and we were very lucky that Tomas lives in the area and knew where to drive and park.
The grounds are lovely and extensive so leave time to explore. We didn’t pay to enter the palace as Tomas advised renovations were happening and some rooms were closed off. There’s plenty to see outside and balconies to walk around and get great scenic photos.

Be prepared to stand in line for tickets if you haven’t bought them online in advance. You have to have a ticket to get in to the park. The castle is beautiful. It feels like walking in a fairytale. We were here April 4 and it was crowded with people. I don’t know how it will be in the high season.
Nice view over Sintra and Lisbon.
We took the train (30 min) from Lisbon. We paid €10 for two persons, round trip. It’s a pretty long walk from downtown Sintra to the castle but a beautiful walk-in the mountain. Have good shoes and water.

We walked to Palácio da Pena through Pena park from old Sintra and it took us a while (we had 3 children in tow). The path up to the park is also beautiful, very lush (but also steep). There was a huge line (cue) to buy tickets to the park, so I recommend purchasing them online. Once we reached the palace again there was a big line to get in. All in all I think we spent more time cueing than actually inside the park/palace. By then the kids were really tired and had no interest in exploring the palace.
In hindsight we would’ve bought tickets online to the park only (you can still walk outside the palace) instead of the combined ticket (park & palace). A beautiful place but get there early in order to enjoy it.
