Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: A 16th-century tower which serves as a monument to Portugal's Age of Discovery on both land and sea.

This area is surrounded by museums so you could easily visit the tower and one or more of these in a day. The area is about 10 / 15 minutes out of the main city centre.

It was very busy when we visited in March so don't expect the perfect photos you see in the guide books.

The tower was built in the 16th century on a small island on the Tagus River as part of defense system of the city. We did not actually have time to go through the complex but enjoyed the walk along the river to the site and the park around it. The whole area is very scenic.

A landmark best viewed at sunset, in silhouette... a nice park surrounding but not really worth going inside.
