Located in the center of Lisbon. Besides Belem is everything on walking distance. It's also 20-30min driving from Airport.
The reception was friendly and helpful.
The rooms were spacious, very clean.
Breakfast: the room is not that big but you could find everything you can imagine to eat.
Remark: for lunch they offer the possibility to eat sushi. Dinner is not possible in the hotel.

We stayed in this hotel for five nights and were generally impressed by its quality. The staff were always friendly and helpful too. Our third floor room looked down on to the side street in which the hotel is sited. We could view the castle from the bay window of the room. We did have a problem locating the hotel but it was dark and we arrived late at night. The room was quite large and the bathroom was equally generous in size. The bed was very comfortable too.
The position of the hotel in the city means that it is very convenient for walking to the sites and using public transport. There is also a supermarket within a seven minute walk. There is no road noise but we were constantly aware of the rumble of the Metro which runs directly under the hotel. This did not disturb our sleep as the Metro closes during the night.
The breakfast was tasty and was buffet style with sparkling wine available and tasty pastries, in addition to a selection of hot food, cold meats and fruit. However, the breakfast room is small and we had to queue for twenty minutes on the first morning at 9 a.m. We learnt from this on subsequent days by taking breakfast at 8.15 when there were no problems.

We stayed in Hotel Portugal for 4 nights during Easter 2018 in the suite priced at EUR 300 per night. At the booking, hotel requested the credit card details and reserved deposit.

Despite that, at the arrival, I was asked to pay upfront for the stay - something what never happened to me before. I literally live in the hotels around the year, those ranking from Ritz-Carltons of this world to humble family hotels. The credit card or cash deposit with final payment on check out day was always fine.

Not in Hotel Portugal. Despite the high price, the hotel staff will treat you as an untrastworthy person, asking for upfront payment referring to the "hotel policies". After first night prepayment, credit card deposit still in place, we were given the room keys valid for 24 hours. Yet the second day morning, upon our return from breakfast, we have found our keys blocked. After long discussion with the front desk manager, we were told that as an exception, our keys will be active for whole stay without any further prepayments. Yet again, the last evening, we have found our keys not working. Upon contacting reception, the manager on duty explained to us that "he was given instructions to not release our keys before the full payment is settled" - something what was done immediately with firm decision of not coming to this hotel again.

We spend three nights in Hotel Portugal and had a lovely stay. All staff are very polite and helpful. We were lucky to received an upgraded room, which was perfect - thank you. The breakfast is plentiful and varied. We had drinks in the bar one evening, this is the same room as breakfast, we thought that as a bar it lacked atmosphere. The new cellar bar we thought was a abut spooky as we were the only two down there!! As with previous reviews we agree that the hotel is ideally located for the metro and walking around town but at night not as comfortable. Groups of people loitering, we were offered drugs each evening by the same man. There are always lots of police around during the day but didn't see any around at night.

Room Tip: Higher rooms probably can't hear metro

My wife and I stayed in the Hotel Portugal as part of our wedding anniversary break. The hotel is very well located in the old town, close to the Rossio Metro and train station and in walking distance to shops and bars, restaurants.
The hotel is very well maintained and the staff are both friendly and helpful.
We were booked into Room 214, which interestingly others have commented on, which sits above the Metro line. The Metro runs from 6.30am to 12pm. If you’re a light sleeper or you plan on spending a lot of time in your room you might want to ask for a move to a higher floor. We aren’t light sleepers and there’s more than enough going on in the city to keep you out and about from early morning to late at night.
The breakfast offering is absolutely fine and the bar service in the cellar is first rate.
Just keep your wits about you at night, particularly in the adjoining squares. We were followed but fortunately rumbled the would be thieves before they had a chance to try robbing us.
Would have no issue recommending Hotel Portugal.
