In two museums on beautiful grounds in downtown Lisbon. One houses ancient art and a second modern art from the collection of the Armenian millionaire and collector who eventually made Portugal his home in the 20th century and donated his huge collection to the nation.

A great gallery with high quality exhibits brilliantly displayed (not crammed for wall space like the V&A in London but really well exhibited). Don't miss the Dragonfly Glass brooch by Rene Lalique or JMW Turner's oil painting of the Entrance to the Seine plus some excellent Persian ceramics and carpets / fabrics. Loads of great art well displayed must make it one of the great Museums in Europe and the gardens are a great sanctuary in a busy city. Spend half a day there, you'll not be disappointed if you love art! Great cafe too....what's not to love?

Certainly Senhor Gulbenkian had help with a curator or two, as this is a MAGNIFICENT private collection. We have see other privately-acquired collections, most notably the Anderson Collection within the Stanford Campus in Palo Alto, California. The Gulbenkian collection is a great cross-section of the interests and shows the passions of the collector. Highly recommended!

I love museums but this place was extra special. Not only was the collection great it was displayed so well. What a collector he was! It is definitely worth the visit. The day we were there was Founders Day and admission was free. The cafe is wonderful. Lots of variety on the menu and you can sit outside looking at the park like setting. Great visit!
