We have just come back from the most wonderful stay in this gorgeous apartment, which has felt like a home away from home. The apartment is furbished with much attention to detail and has a charming and historic feel throughout, being located within the castle walls and right opposite the castle towers. We loved sitting by the open balcony doors and looking onto the peaceful life around the apartment, including the beautiful castle peacocks that occassionally came to visit on the rooftops across the road. The apartment looks exactly as beautiful as shown in the pictures and had all the amenities we needed for our stay, including a fabulous coffee maker and even a welcome bottle of excellent portugues wine, a fridge with a few delicious bits and bobs for the breakfast and a nice selection of relaxing CDS. The super friendly owners communicated swiftly and helpfully throughout the booking process and while we were there, left lots of useful information and messaged us additional tips during our stay. We really cannot rate this apartment highly enough - it is a little gem in a wonderful part of an amazing city and we are definitely hoping to be back!
First, I really liked the owner of this apartment, Ana. She took care of things we didn't even think to need. Such as: some food in the fridge, a liter of bottled water (and wine!). There's nothing better than arriving at an unfamiliar locale and having a few things to ease the transition, especially for tired travelers.
Pros: great location, authentic building and flea market chic decor make this apartment pretty/charming and functional. We did a lot of cooking during our stay and the kitchen and its implements held up well to breakfasts and dinners prepared by yours truly. Fast enough internet for me to catch up with job affairs on down time; a definite plus. The vistas everywhere we looked were great and a handy grocery and laundromat not too far from the apartment afforded ease for the week-long visit. Cross breezes kept the dwelling fresh and cool. Beautiful Fado (local music) played all day and that was pleasant. With Lisbon wine and bread being excellent, fresh and cheap - it was all good.
Ana phoned the taxi for our return to the airport, in addition to being helpful at every turn.
Cons: for Americans [mainly] you might find the noise to be a *thing* if the windows are kept open at night, so be prepared. Also, the bed is fairly hard so that could cause discomfort. Europeans, like a lot of non-American countries, are just louder out-of-hand. People yell, stomp, laugh and live in a way that is very noisy in comparison to our culture. That is not a fault of the apartment, but a default of European culture in tight quarters and big cities. Be aware. We knew this going in and don't care. It is what it is.
Loved our stay. Would return and recommend.
Close to the castle our apartments location was pleasantly quiet and in an authentic historic part of the city with narrow cobbled streets. The apartment has everything you can want and more. The well stocked cupboards made life so easy. The owner was wonderful and gave us good advice about visiting and eating.
The apartment is small but well-equipped, with one bedroom, bathroom with shower, living area and a kitchen. Ana met us when we arrived and greeted us with some port and choccies as well as bread/milk/cheese etc in the fridge. She was very welcoming and also sorted our taxi to get to the hire car when we left. The apartment is cosy and had plenty of space for my husband, 15 month old and I for our 3 days in Lisbon. The castle is literally on the doorstep and we could here the peacocks from our balcony! We ambitiously decided to take the metro and walk up to the apartment, in hindsight we should've got a taxi (lots of bags/pram etc) as it is a very steep uphill walk along cobbled streets. It's on the first floor, quite a narrow set of stairs so we carried the pram up and down which wasn't too much hassle. We'd definitely recommend staying here!
This second floor apartment was clean with comfy beds and attractive furnishings. We especially enjoyed the coffee, bread and yogurt provided by our hosts. The location is very good for exploring Alfama and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby. The only downsides were a bit of noise coming from an upstairs apartment and there isn't anywhere to sit other than the beds. Neither were major problems just minor inconveniences. A very good value overall.
